One Yoga – Kundalini Yoga

Edward told me it would be intense, different from any yoga I had done before, there would be chanting…

Well, I have never been a great singer, but hey, why not, growth occurs outside your comfort zone.

It was a quaint, and peaceful yoga studio he has been attending for years; before he moved out west to San Francisco. It was only two blocks from my house, and, of course, like many sibling relationships… we had a little tension beforehand.

I was running late at a bookstore doing some Christmas shopping; I told him to go alone to prevent him from being late. Finally, I got there, I was 5 minutes late. I proceeded to slowly make my way into the studio; trying not to disturb the peaceful yogis.  I found a spot next to my brother, who peacefully smiled, recognizing that Henry made it to Kundalini Yoga.

Fast forward to my fourth Kundalini Class with Nicole.

“Ong namo guru dev namo” we chanted to begin the class.

The translation “I bow to the teacher within me”.

This is perfect.  As a huge, grateful grin spread across my face;  I NEEDED TO SHARE this with the The Mastermind Within community.  We all have so much to learn, but we need to look inward, so we are able to truly be present outward.  This whole class pushes your physical, emotional, and spiritual capabilities.

What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini Yoga is the ancient science of liberating the dormant potential energy in the base of the spine (Kundalini). The definition of yoga in Kundalini yoga is the union of the mental current (ida) and the pranic current (pingala) in the third eye (ajna chakra) or at the base chakra (muladhara chakra).  This unifies duality in us by connecting body and mind and leads to the awakening of spiritual conciousness.”

It is truly impossible to explain the spiritual phenomenon of Kundalini yoga. It represents a re-birth, a spiritual journey, and the the subconscious realization of our ability to connect to the world.  We are all one, part of something bigger then ourselves.  Such as an organization, team, or in our case, chanting; the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Fire Breath?

Pranayama is the regulation of breath and a staple to yoga. In Kundalini we are introduced to a new breath (my favorite breath) – FIRE BREATH.  

To describe fire breath, try imagining you are a big black lab playing outside on a warm sunny day. Your tongue is hanging out, you are panting… short quick breaths.  Now close your mouth and continue this breath, while putting a hand on your naval.  You feel the negative energy leaving your body with every exhale, and positive vibes flowing in with each inhale.

My Recommendation

Everyone has their own spiritual experiences, and I have fallen in love with Kundalini yoga.   It is a beautiful practice and recommend it to anyone looking to further develop their self-awareness.  I want to thank Nicole for her passion of guiding Kundalini yoga, and to know we appreciate her enthusiasm, experience, and wisdom!

      Michael – this is awesome! Tony Robbins is a personal hero, and the emotional flood exercise is simple yet powerful. That’s amazing you did this at a live event, was it an experience of a lifetime?
