Blog Traffic and Income Report – June 2017

Erik Thoughts of a Mastermind 20 Comments

Welcome to the sixth monthly Blog Traffic and Income Report for The Mastermind Within! Each month, we will be posting our blog statistics to give readers an understanding of the nuts and bolts of what Erik, Jake, and Henry are doing and achieving here at The Mastermind Within.

This post will take the following form: first, a recap of the various posts written by Erik, Jake and Henry throughout the month. Second, the traffic and income statistics which are gathered from Google Analytics and the various affiliate and ad networks The Mastermind Within takes part in. Third, we will discuss what changes or strategies we have for the next month, June 2017, to try to grow traffic and make money. As always, any and all feedback is gladly welcomed. I know that I don’t know everything about blogging. (not even close)

June 2017 Post Summary

In June, we posted 9 times. As mentioned in our goals post, we want to post 250 times in 2017. In January, February, March, April, and May, we posted 96 times. With posts in June, that makes 105 for the year. We are on pace for 210 posts in 2017; It’s still possible to crank our 25 posts a month, but will require discipline.

Jake, Henry and Erik had a few posts on the May Traffic Report, and their goals update:

Henry is back from Spain and will be writing about getting his real estate license after quitting his job. He had 0 posts in May.

Erik had 6 posts in June. Some of these are serious, some of these are silly.  Here is a list of the non-book review posts Erik wrote in June:

Jake had 0 posts.

Finally, we featured one guest post in June from Amy Nickson, a professional content writer at Oak View Law Group.

The team posted 0 book reviews. Erik had to take a break from his reading goal and will be back at it in July!

Guest Appearances

There were no guest appearances for The Mastermind Within bloggers.

In July, we will continue to look to gain exposure through guest posting.

Next… on to the numbers!

June 2017 Blog Statistics

In June 2017, we had 2,427 page views and we made $2.20!! Big money!! (You think we can retire off this? Joking!) This represents a decrease of 30% in viewership month over month.

June 2017 Google Analytics Summary

June blog google analytics

June 2017 blog google analytics

June was down from May in terms of traffic. Traffic decreased 31% on a month over month basis. We had an increase in the number of users month over month by nearly 16% and our bounce rate and pages per session had positive changes month over month. All that said, we were able to grow our email list by a nice amount, which is always good 🙂

June 2017 Traffic and Income Report

June 2017 income blog report

In the Income Report, you can see the breakdown of revenue for the month of June: we have affiliates links throughout the site from Bluehost, Amazon, MyFinance, SoFi, and Xtheme. In addition, we utilize Google AdSense. As the page views increase, these numbers should increase. Time will tell; this is a fun experiment!

We are very excited that we were able to grow the number of email subscribers following The Mastermind Within! THANK YOU READERS AND SUBSCRIBERS 🙂 In May, The FREE Personal Finance Income Statement was a big contributor to our increase in total subscribers, and it continued in June. In addition, there are a number of people who came over from Quora. Erik has increased his follower-ship on Quora to over 170 people and has received over 285k views.

One positive thing is we saw an uptick in search engine traffic. Over 30% of the traffic was from search engines, which is a good sign! Real estate on Google is extremely valuable! 🙂

Overall, we are improving! As you can see above, 165 subscribers and 17,255 views in 6 months is pretty good, but far from great (especially if we want to take this full time.) By staying consistent, we will be able to keep this train humming!

Action Steps for July

Consistency is the key to blogging. June was a busy month. Erik has a few posts to look forward to: a 6 month recap on his reading goal, an in-depth look his finances, and also continued focus on providing freebies. Henry is going to provide us an update on his trip and future thoughts.

Also, we spent a fair amount of time commenting on other people’s blogs. We do this for two reasons: one, it is part of our mission statement. We want to build a community where knowledge can accumulate and ideas can prosper.

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

The second reason is it is a fairly decent method to get traction in the blogosphere. By commenting on the following sites, we were able to get a majority of our page views:

Take Your Success Mustard Seed Money Freedom 40 Plan I Saved 5k
Life and My Finances Miss Mazuma Fiery Millennials Financially Alert
Making Sense of Cents Penny and Rich ESI Money Enwealthen
Dividend Life Buy, Hold Long Epic Quiver Go Finance Yourself
Gen Y Finance Guy Biglaw Investor The Frugal Farmer Abovare
Simple Money Man Investment Hunting Full Time Finance 1500 Days
Freedom is Groovy Life Zemplified Think Save Retire Debt Discipline
Super Saving Tips Pennies and Dollars The Green Swan Mama Fish Saves

In the coming months, we will keep providing value through posts and products, continue to be consistent with our posting, and continue to grow each and every day! 🙂

How did June go for your blog or website? What tips or tricks could you share with us to improve our blog?

  1. Thanks for posting these reports. It is a tough world out there trying to get a following. Just so many good blogs. Like you said consistency is key. I am planning to join Quora this month so I’m glad you have had some success there.

I’ll make sure to follow you Grant 🙂 There’s a few of us personal finance bloggers on there. Sometimes I’ll throw a low-key link to a relevant article… usually it brings a few people over 🙂

  2. Thanks for sharing Erik. My June was slightly down from May as well in Pageviews (150) but from what I hear that’s common for the summer. Keep creating great content and you’ll be ready for the fall. 🙂

You are welcome Amy – I love doing these updates. I’ve noticed your efforts on social media to try to get conversations going and hype around your blog – it motivates me each time I see you around! 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by.

  3. Not big numbers but you guys are a perfect example of how bloggers start out before they explode and start making the big bucks!

My blog has only been up for a couple months so I know income may take awhile to start rolling in.

However, I like your income reports! Keep pushing on.

  4. Don;t sweat the drop too much. Summer months are always down. Congrats on the MyFinance income. They reached out to me a few months ago but I haven’t decided if i want to add them to my site. What’s your opinion of them?

Hey IH, thanks for stopping by.

For myFinance ads, they are pretty good – much better than adsense and any other programs I’ve used (albeit a small sample size of programs). As you’ve probably noticed, at the end of each post, there is a 3×2 of custom ads which myfinance pushes to its users. It’s easy to set-up. Then, if you want to include dynamic ads (in post ads), there is “smart placements”. These seem to be pretty good as well. I’d recommend them over the other ad networks. Does this help?

I think there is some opportunity to get something on the right sidebar, but I haven’t explored it – I definitely agree on adsense, it kind of sucks.

  5. In a past blogging life I created, ran and sold a very large personal finance blog. My glidepath looked exactly like yours for the first several months. It’s a battle of attrition – stay the course and you will soon your traction increase exponentially.

I look forward to following along!
