Blog Traffic and Income Report – May 2017

Erik Thoughts of a Mastermind 22 Comments

Welcome to the fifth monthly Blog Traffic and Income Report for The Mastermind Within! Each month, we will be posting our blog statistics to give readers an understanding of the nuts and bolts of what Erik, Jake, and Henry are doing and achieving here at The Mastermind Within.

This post will take the following form: first, a recap of the various posts written by Erik, Jake and Henry throughout the month. Second, the traffic and income statistics which are gathered from Google Analytics and the various affiliate and ad networks The Mastermind Within takes part in. Third, we will discuss what changes or strategies we have for the next month, May 2017, to try to grow traffic and make money. As always, any and all feedback is gladly welcomed. I know that I don’t know everything about blogging. (not even close)

May 2017 Post Summary

In May, Henry, Jake and Erik posted 16 times. As mentioned in our goals post, we want to post 250 times in 2017. In January, February, March, and April, we posted 80 times. With posts in May, that makes 96 for the year. We are on pace for 230 posts in 2017; we just need to stay consistent and we can accomplish this!

Jake, Henry and Erik had a few posts on our FREE Personal Finance Income Statement, the March Traffic Report, and their goals update:

Henry is over in Spain and has been busy on a personal spiritual journey after quitting his job.

Erik had 6 posts in May. Some of these are serious, some of these are silly. He really enjoyed writing the “Looking for a wife” post 🙂 Here is a list of the non-book review posts Erik wrote in May:

Jake had a post on cryptocurrencies. Here is a list of the non-book review posts Jake wrote in April:

Finally, we featured two guest post in May from Kyle Nelson, executive coach from Cubefulness, and Drew Cloud, who blogs at Student Loan Report.

Erik posted the following 4 book reviews:

The Everything Store Content Inc
Book Review Book Review
five people meet in heaven Skill with People
Book Review Book Review

Guest Appearances

In May, Erik and Henry had a guest appearance on GenYFinanceGuy‘s blog. Dom reached out to us and asked if we would be interested in writing out a 10 year plan. Both Henry and Erik wrote out their vision for the next 10 years. What’s incredible, is 2 months after writing it, some of the things are coming true!

In June, we will continue to look to gain exposure through guest posting.

Next… on to the numbers!

May 2017 Blog Statistics

In May 2017, we had 3,496 page views and we made $21.27!! Big money!! (You think we can retire off this? Joking!) This represents a decrease of 2% in viewership month over month.

May 2017 Google Analytics Summary

May traffic google analyticsmay traffic compared april traffic

May was actually down from April in terms of traffic. Traffic decreased 2% on a month over month basis. We had an increase in the number of users month over month by nearly 30%, but our bounce rate and pages per session were down over 10%. That being said, we were able to grow our email list by a nice amount – I guess this is the pain of acquiring new subscribers!

May 2017 Traffic and Income Report

May Traffic and Income Report

In the Income Report, you can see the breakdown of revenue for the month of April: we have affiliates links throughout the site from Bluehost, Amazon, MyFinance, SoFi, and Xtheme. In addition, we utilize Google AdSense. As the page views increase, these numbers should increase. Time will tell; this is a fun experiment!

We are very excited that we were able to almost double the number of email subscribers following The Mastermind Within! THANK YOU READERS AND SUBSCRIBERS 🙂 The FREE Personal Finance Income Statement was a big contributor to our increase in total subscribers. In addition, there are a number of people who came over from Quora. Erik has increased his follower-ship on Quora to over 130 people and has received over 165k views.

For revenue, Amazon is a headscratcher. We had 67 clicks on our links and 0 conversions. Another headscratcher is Fiverr. For Fiverr, we have had 319 in the last 3 months and 0 conversions. MyFinance hit a few times, so it seems those ad units are working.

Overall, we are improving! As you can see above, 143 subscribers and 14,828 views in 5 months is pretty good, but far from great (especially if we want to take this full time.) By staying consistent, we will be able to keep this train humming!

Action Steps for June

We created a lot of momentum for June in May. We were able to put together a couple freebies, and will continue to post high quality content. While the traffic numbers came in a little lower than we would have wanted, our email list and search engine traffic is promising. We expect June to be a good month.

Also, we spent a fair amount of time commenting on other people’s blogs. We do this for two reasons: one, it is part of our mission statement. We want to build a community where knowledge can accumulate and ideas can prosper.

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

The second reason is it is a fairly decent method to get traction in the blogosphere. By commenting on the following sites, we were able to get a majority of our page views:

Take Your Success Mustard Seed Money Freedom 40 Plan I Saved 5k
Life and My Finances Miss Mazuma Fiery Millennials Financially Alert
Making Sense of Cents Penny and Rich ESI Money Enwealthen
Dividend Life Buy, Hold Long Epic Quiver Go Finance Yourself
Gen Y Finance Guy Biglaw Investor The Frugal Farmer Abovare
Simple Money Man Investment Hunting Full Time Finance 1500 Days
Freedom is Groovy Life Zemplified Think Save Retire Debt Discipline
Super Saving Tips Pennies and Dollars The Green Swan Mama Fish Saves

In the coming months, we will keep providing value through posts and products, continue to be consistent with our posting, and continue to grow each and every day! 🙂

How did May go for your blog or website? What tips or tricks could you share with us to improve our blog?

  1. Love the format of these posts! Thanks for being fully transparent; it definitely serves as a resource for other bloggers and will be fun to watch as we all grow. May was a good month for Just Another Dollar as well. We saw our highest pageviews yet and started to see some email subscribers, which is a great result. We’re looking forward to some good growth in June. Pinterest might be something to explore to drive more traffic; although apparently it can be difficult for guys to gain traction there. I’m lucky enough to have a Pinterest-expert gal on my team to handle that end of things. Let us know if you’re out there and we’ll get you added to our board!

Hey Ryan, thanks for stopping by! 🙂

I really enjoy reading these on other sites, so why not give all the details out to my readers? I’m thinking about doing this for the new business as well – it may be a little bit messy initially, but will be fun to see the progress!

I’ve heard great things about Pinterest, but just need to take a look at it!

      Have a good weekend Ryan.

  2. Keep up the great work guys. Love the transparency. You’re off to a solid start. You’ll see peaks and valleys as far as traffic. Just keep producing great content and they will come!

Hey Brian, transparency is the way to go! Hopefully we can keep seeing solid improvement each month. I’m loving this experiment!

  3. Great job guys! Love seeing these reports from other new bloggers.

May has been a tough traffic month for me too, with higher bounce rates and shorter time on site. I wonder what’s up!? You’re subscriber growth is awesome though, keep it going!

Thanks Chelsea! It’s fun to compete with other new bloggers… but I feel like we are falling a bit behind. (You should never compare your day 0 to someone else’s day 100 but when you are both at day 100… 🙂 )

  4. You all are doing awesome. I would definitely go all in when it comes to Pinterest. I keep reading that it is a huge driver for finance bloggers and I think you could get a nice up tick that way. I know since I started to use the free trial of Board Booster that I’ve seen a nice uptick. So you may consider that.

Thanks Mustard Seed Money. I guess I need to finally set up a Pinterest account, lots of people suggesting it!

  5. Keep up the good work, guys. I can tell you that it takes time, but if you’re willing to keep working at it the money will follow. As far as Amazon, it’s all about linking to content that makes sense and fits in. There are times when I have thousands of clicks and no converts. Just keep moving forward, adding the links in when you think it will benefit your readers.

Thanks Laurie for the support and suggestion. You do a really good job of putting in high quality suggestions for Amazon…

  6. Great progress, guys! Don’t worry about the slight downtick in traffic, that will change with time as long as you keep writing quality content.

I really appreciated this in-depth and transparent report. You reminded me that I need to start commenting on other blogs more. It’s always on my “to do” list, but I never seem to cross it off!

Looking forward to seeing more of your progress over the next couple of months.

  7. Doing great guys, keep up the good work. That is some great traffic for only a short few months. Commenting on other blogs really helps to drive traffic. Grows more links to your page and I think helps your google rating overall. Also, love the Arthur Ashe quote. Just keep adding quality content and the traffic will come.

Thanks DD for the comment and support. 5 months and almost 15k views is pretty good. Just need to stay consistent like you said!!

  8. I love Benjamin Franklin quotes, and I love what you guys are doing. Congrats on another good month.

As always, Erik, I appreciate you visiting my site and commenting, and sharing your info. I’m a good 1 1/2 months behind you so this helps give me a decent gauge, so thank you.

Hey Amy, glad you enjoyed the quotes. I really like your content as well – it’d be interesting to compare notes on what has worked for you and what hasn’t!

      Have a good one.

  9. One of the most impactful, long-term accomplishment I see that you made was the total subscribers. That’s almost a 96% increase month over month. Keep that going because the relationships and contacts you build off this will be a huge intangible asset. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more monthly reports.

Hey John, I completely agree with you – the increase in subscribers is what will make this grow! 🙂

I look forward to publishing these reports as well… both our successes and failures!

  10. Keep up the momentum guys! It’s awesome to have a team so that if one goes down the others can pick you up. 🙂
It’s great to see how others are doing and you all are building a great foundation with products and content.
