The Mastermind Within Goals Check-in – July 2017

Erik Thoughts of a Mastermind 11 Comments

At the start of the New Year, I outlined goals I wanted to pursue in 2017. 2017 has started off great and will continue to be fantastic. This post is the July goals check-in.

“To have more, you simply have to become more. Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. For things to change, you have to change. For things to get better, you have to get better!” – Jim Rohn

By focusing on our mission statement and purpose, we are setting up a platform for other like-minded individuals to share their ideas, build knowledge, and experience amazing personal growth.

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

To build a collaborative community, we have some blog goals which we want to check in and see our progress. Checking in keeps us accountable and responsible for the goals. In addition, if one goal is lacking, we can adjust our plans and focus in on our weaknesses.

The Mastermind Within Blog Goals:

Blog Goal #1 – Write 250 175 Posts

In July, I posted 9 times.  In the first 6 months, there were posted 105 posts. With 9 posts in July, that makes 114 for the year. I don’t think 250 is a reasonable goal given all the things going on in life, especially since I thought I’d have help with the goal. I think 175 is a more reasonable goal 🙂

Here’s a listing of the non-book review posts:

I had a few posts on the general blog topics:  the June Traffic Report, and my goals update for June.

I had 6 posts in July.  Here is a list of the non-book review posts I wrote in July:

With 9 posts in July, that makes 114 for the year. We are on pace for 195 posts in 2017; I’m doing well with the goal update 🙂 12 posts a month will result in 175!

Blog Goal #1.5 – Write 100 80 Book Reviews

A subset of posts were book reviews. I’m revising this goal to 80 book reviews. I posted 1 book review.

Book Review

With 1 book review in July, and 38 in first 6 months, I’m on pace for 66 book reviews in 2017. I need to pick it up!

Blog Goal #2 – Get 15,000 page views in a single month by the end of 2017

In July, the blog had 3,126 page views. In June, the blog had 2,427 page views; our viewership decreased 29% month over month. To reach 15,000 page views in a single month, we will have to grow the blog’s viewership by nearly double each month on a month over month basis. This is certainly achievable but we need to start expanding into different social media channels. I’ve found some decent success in Twitter, so I’m going to keep on that path.

This goal will be accomplished through a combination of SEO, social media, and a continued focus on providing value through freebies to our readers.

Blog Goal #3 – Make 10 appearances on other websites/podcasts/etc.

In July, there were 0 guest posts or appearances on other websites/podcasts/etc. I have done 4 of these so far in 2017.

In August,  we will continue to look to gain exposure through guest posting. We are 40% of the way to achieving this goal.

Now on to personal goals:

The Update on Personal Goals:

Personal Goal #1 –  Read 75 books

I read 1 books in July. I have finished 30 books so far in 2017; this puts him on pace for 52 books in 2017. Check out my full summary of his goal to read 75 books in 2017 here.

Personal Goal #2 – Buy another property (either primary residence or investment property)

I almost bought a property in April 2017 and it was a a wild 2 week period.  As I touched on in his 2017 financial plan post, I plan to max out my IRA and get rid of PMI. Buying property is not a main focus for me in 2017 as the housing market is super hot.

Personal Goal #3 – Grab the rim in basketball

I was able to grab rim in mid-February. I can still touch rim, but has fallen off a little bit in terms of explosiveness. It’s on my list to get back in the gym in August. My health is my true wealth!

Personal Goal #4 – Build Cash, 401k and investments by $35k.

July was a solid month. I had an decrease in cash by $2,809,  increased his 401(k) balance by $349, increased his HSA balance by $262, and increased equity in his house by $5,160 (getting rid of PMI baby!!) for a total increase of $2,964.

For the first seven months of 2017, Erik has built his cash, 401(k), and investment positions by $30,220. Almost there!

I’m not worried about hitting this goal.

Overall, 2017 has been going great these first seven months. How are you doing on your 2017 goals?

Erik

  1. I started to use twitter back in May and started to use the free Hootsuite plan to automate my post twice a day. The result is improving and I am getting about 10% of my traffic from Twitter. I am lot more active on twitter and hopefully I can improve my traffic from Twitter to 20% by the end of the year. I read a research that 4pm is the best time to tweet.

Keep on experimenting and you’ll be able to find a sweet spot to gain more traffic.

  2. These are all ambitious goals, of course, but I think the most ambitious is the number of blog posts. In your first 6 months this year you posted more than I will post all of 2017. And I’m struggling to keep up with my schedule! I can’t imagine the work that goes into that much posting.

I wish I could do more… 🙂 Thanks for stopping by. If I could stay steady on a M W F schedule, I think this would be optimal!

  3. Nice! I use twitter and have found decent success. I have thought about growing my social media presence but I just don’t think I have enough time to dedicate to growing another at this time. Eventually, I want to get more into Pinterest.

For personal goals, I need to wrap up my new rental property build. Between bad weather and issues with the city, it keeps getting delayed and I’m not 100% sure it’ll be done in 2017. In the meantime, I’m focusing on savings, investing and planning my trip to Spain in September!

I told myself I wanted to get into pinterest a while ago, but I never did. Maybe I’ll jump back into it.

Thanks for sharing your plans 🙂 best of luck!
