“To have more, you simply have to become more. Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. For things to change, you have to change. For things to get better, you have to get better!” – Jim Rohn
At the start of the New Year, the writers at The Mastermind Within, Erik and Henry, outlined goals they wanted to pursue in 2017. 2017 has started off great and will continue to be fantastic. By focusing on our mission statement and purpose, we are setting up a platform for other like-minded individuals to share their ideas, build knowledge, and experience amazing personal growth.
The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:
The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.
To build a collaborative community, we have some blog goals which we want to check in and see our progress. Checking in keeps us accountable and responsible for the goals. In addition, if one goal is lacking, we can adjust our plans and focus in on our weaknesses.
The Mastermind Within Blog Goals:
Blog Goal #1 – Write 250 Posts
In February, Henry and Erik posted 22 times.

With 25 posts in January, that makes 47 for the year. We are on pace for 282 posts in 2017; we just need to stay consistent and we will hit this goal.
Blog Goal #1.5 – Write 100 Book Reviews
A subset of posts were book reviews. Erik posted 6 book reviews in February. Henry didn’t have any book reviews.
Erik posted the following book reviews:
With 6 book reviews in February, and 13 in January, we are on pace for 114 book reviews in 2017. At this rate, we will surpass 100 book reviews and successfully complete our goal.
Blog Goal #2 – Get 15,000 page views in a single month by the end of 2017
In February, we received 2,989 page views and believe the growth of the blog has been solid until this point. In January, we received 1,636 page views: our viewership increased 89% month over month. To reach 15,000 page views in a single month, we will have to grow the blog’s viewership by 17.51% on a month over month basis. This is certainly achievable.
Blog Goal #3 – Make 10 appearances on other websites/podcasts/etc.
Erik and Henry did not make any appearances on other websites/podcasts/etc. in January. We are trying to build relationships to address this goal.

Now on to personal goals:
The Update on Erik’s Personal Goals:
Personal Goal for Erik #2 – Buy another property (either primary residence or investment property)
Erik did not buy a property in February 2017. As he discussed in his 2017 financial plan post, he plans to invest in his IRA and get rid of PMI. There is an outside chance he purchases another property, but at this point, he doesn’t think this goal will be fulfilled.
Personal Goal for Erik #3 – Grab the rim in basketball
Erik was able to grab rim in mid-February. This was a combination of lifting consistently, eating well, and sleeping enough each night to encourage recovery. Erik has been lifting consistently, doing the following weekly split: Monday – chest and shoulders, Tuesday – legs, Thursday – back, and basketball on Sunday. For chest and shoulders, usually his exercises include some form of barbell bench press (flat or incline), dumbbell chest press at various angles, shoulder press and shoulder side raises. For legs, back squat and lunges are the main exercises. For back, deadlifts and bent over row are the main lifts, and pull-ups round out the workout. By performing explosive exercises like squats and deadlifts, Erik can continue to grab rim. Who knows, dunking might be next on the agenda!!
Personal Goal for Erik #4 – Build Cash, 401k and investments by $35k.
February was a big month. Erik received his bonus from work and opened a Roth IRA. In February, Erik had a reduction in his cash position by $2,739, increased his 401(k) balance by $446, increased his HSA by $299 balance, contributed $5,500 to his Roth IRA, and increased equity in his house by$3,028 for a total increase of $6,815. Combining February and January’s efforts of $3,275, Erik has built his cash, 401(k), and investment positions by $10,091.
Erik is not worried about hitting this goal. There is a promotion in the works at his day job and he recently came across a new opportunity which should bring in $10k-20k this year. By staying consistent with investing and saving, Erik will hit this goal easily.
The update for Henry’s personal goals:
Personal Goal for Henry #1 – Pay off all personal debt ($15,000 for house projects/remodels) and save 20,000$ in cash by the end of 2017.
In February, Henry was able to pay off $5,237 of personal debt this February leaving around $11,000 remaining. The next two months will be huge for paying down debt: his duplex has renters, Henry received his Federal / State tax return as well as a Bonus in February. Henry is looking to pay off another $4,000 dollars by the end of March. In addition to debt pay-down, Henry was able to build his 401(k) by $252.34 (contributions and paying back his 401k loan), his HSA by $313 , and build equity in his house by $501.10.
Personal Goal for Henry #2 – Dunk a men’s basketball on a 10 foot rim during a league basketball game before our 16 week season is over.
Henry is able to grab the rim strongly with two-hands and dunk on an alley-oop. Henry has been lifting consistently 2-3 days a week (Positive Transformation – Bigger, Faster, Stronger 9) along with triggering workouts, basketball, yoga, and introducing MAPS Prime to strengthen the mind-body connection. Improvements have been in Muscle Adaption (phase two of workout program) with the next phase being focused on Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy AKA “Feeling the Pump”. Continued physical adaption and explosiveness will set up the best opportunity to dunk in a game. I’m feeling excited to be one dunking instead of being dunked over!
Overall, 2017 has been going great these first two months. How are you doing on your 2017 goals?
