At the start of the New Year, the writers at The Mastermind Within, Erik and Henry, outlined goals they wanted to pursue in 2017. 2017 has started off great and will continue to be fantastic. By focusing on our mission statement and purpose, we are setting up a platform for other like-minded individuals to share their ideas, build knowledge, and experience amazing personal growth.

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

To build a collaborative community, we have some blog goals which we want to check in and see our progress. Checking in keeps us accountable and responsible for the goals. In addition, if one goal is lacking, we can adjust our plans and focus in on our weaknesses.

The Mastermind Within Blog Goals:

Blog Goal #1 – Write 250 Posts

In January, Henry and I posted 25 times. Henry had a few posts on yoga, working out, and taking a loan from his 401(k) to pay down debt. Here is a list of the non-book review posts Henry wrote in January:

Erik had posts on increasing his credit limit, taking out a credit card to save money, and his goal to read 75 books. Here is a list of the non-book review posts Erik wrote in January:

With 25 posts in the month of January, we are on pace for 300 posts in 2017. We are in line with our goal and hope to stay consistent throughout the coming months.

With 13 book reviews in January, we are on pace for 156 book reviews in 2017. At this rate, we will surpass 100 book reviews and successfully complete our goal.

Blog Goal #2 – Get 15,000 page views in a single month by the end of 2017

In January, we received 1,636 page views and believe this is a good starting point. At this point, to reach 15,000 page views in a single month, we will have to grow the blog’s viewership 22.3% on a month over month basis. This is certainly achievable.

Blog Goal #3 – Make 10 appearances on other websites/podcasts/etc.

Erik and Henry did not make any appearances on other websites/podcasts/etc. in January. We are trying to build relationships to address this goal.

Now on to personal goals:

The Update on Erik’s Personal Goals:

Personal Goal for Erik #1 –  Read 75 books

Erik read 8 books in January. This puts him on pace for 96 books in 2017. Check out a more detailed summary of his findings and books read in January here.

Personal Goal for Erik #2 – Buy another property (either primary residence or investment property)

Erik did not buy a property in January 2017. Erik is waiting until March to start seriously looking for a property. At this point, he believes his cash position isn’t strong enough and wants to keep learning more about investing in real estate as well as learning the market of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.

Personal Goal for Erik #3 – Grab the rim in basketball

Erik was able to get a knuckle over the rim in mid-January. Erik has been lifting consistently, doing the following weekly split: Sunday – chest and shoulders, Monday- legs, Wednesday – back, and basketball on Saturday. For chest and shoulders, usually his exercises include some form of barbell bench press (flat or incline), dumbbell chest press at various angles, shoulder press and shoulder side raises. For legs, back squat and lunges are the main exercises. For back, deadlifts and bent over row are the main lifts, and pull-ups round out the workout. By performing explosive exercises like squats and deadlifts, Erik soon will be up around the rim consistently!

Personal Goal for Erik #4 – Build Cash, 401k and investments by $35k.

In January, Erik was able to build his cash position by $2,281, 401(k) by $262, HSA by $244, and equity in his house by$509 for a total of $3,275. Extrapolating this over 12 months would allow Erik to reach his goal; these numbers are bound to change month to month. February should be a good month for him: Erik is doing his taxes in early February and has a company bonus check coming in late February. In addition, in April or May, a promotion is in the works for Erik which would increase his income a few hundred bucks a month. The plan is to use the raise to increase 401(k) contributions.

The update for Henry’s personal goals:

Personal Goal for Henry #1 – Pay off all personal debt ($15,000 for house projects/remodels) and save 20,000$ in cash by the end of 2017.

In January, Henry was able to pay off $3,137 of personal debt this January leaving around $12,000 remaining.  The next two months will be huge for paying down debt: his duplex has renters, Henry is doing his taxes in early February and he has a company bonus check in late February.  Henry is looking to pay off another $7,000 dollars by the end of March.  In addition to debt pay-down, Henry was able to build his 401(k) by  $252.34 (contributions and paying back his 401k loan), his HSA by $313 , and build equity in his house by $994.68.

Personal Goal for Henry #2 – Dunk a men’s basketball on a 10 foot rim during a league basketball game before our 16 week season is over.

Henry is able to grab the rim strongly with two-hands.  Henry has been lifting consistently 2-3 days a week (Positive Transformations – Bigger, Faster, Stronger 5) along with triggering workouts, Basketball, and Yoga for recovery and spiritual growth.  Improvements have been in strength gains (phase one of workout programming) with the next phase being focused on building muscle.  This continued physical adaption and explosiveness will set up the best opportunity to dunk in a game.  Feeling excited to be one dunking instead of being dunked over!

  1. My goals for 2017 are off to a good start. I have been going to the gym 4x a week and recently got a new job. So I’m two for two for goals this year. I also wanted to save 70% of my take home pay for the year and last month I hit 69.2%. So almost there.
