A new business or celebrity comes into the spotlight and we flock to celebrate their success.

Guess what?

Overnight successes are 5, 10, 20 years in the making.

For the conclusion of our Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur series, I want to inspire you to take action, and to go be the best person you can be in the world.

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.” – Chinese Proverb

I’m going to be an overnight success in 5 years, will you join me?

I’m an ordinary 25 year old. I’m 5’8″ and I weigh 155 pounds. I went to a public school, a public college, and now am working a 9 to 5 at a bank.

I’m also going to be an overnight success in 5 years.

By the time I’m 30, I’m not going to be working at my 9 to 5.

People will be talking about how this quiet kid from Minnesota is now crushing it in his business, finances, and life.

My high school friends will say, “Just 5 years ago, you were hanging out with us playing cards and drinking with us at the bar! What happened?”

My family will say, “So that’s why you were so tired many times coming over!”

It all started with a simple decision in December 2016.

I Made a Simple Decision to Take Action

digital real estate creationThis past Sunday, I was laying in my bed.

I had slept in a little bit; the time read 8:53.

Laying there, I thought it myself, “I just wish I could lay here for another 2 hours, and then do nothing the rest of the day. I haven’t done that in about 15 months. Wouldn’t that be nice?”

A few minutes later, I hoisted myself out of bed.

2 posts, a podcast episode, and a statistical study awaited me in the other room – rise and grind!

The last 15 months have been quite the experience.

Coffee shops at 6 am. Early mornings, late nights. A court appearance. Customer emails and new amazing relationships.

I started a blog, a business, and a podcast. I was promoted at work, and took on a lucrative statistical consulting side hustle.

All of this because I made a simple decision: the decision to take action and pursue my dream of financial freedom through entrepreneurship.

I’m just an ordinary guy who decided one day he was going to take action and do a little more than he was doing before.

Take Action Today

wake up an overnight successLet’s look at the month of March at The Mastermind Within.

I didn’t do anything special. I wrote 12 posts for us in this Wantrepreneur to Entreprenuer series –  a post for each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Writing a blog post doesn’t take any special skills (and actually, I went to college for math, take that teacher who gave me a B- in writing!).

Again, I’m just an ordinary guy, doing ordinary things.

Guess what?

You have amazing talent and potential.

Reach a little higher and tap into that potential.

Show the world your talents and skills; take action today and do something amazing.

Become an Overnight Success

“Try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value.” ~ Albert Einstein

You have complete control over the direction that the rest of your life takes.

What are your passions and values? What makes you happiest in this world? Why do you like doing those things? How can you align these passions and values with your efforts on a daily basis?

It’s not going to be easy.

The path to success is lonely and demanding.

Here’s the thing though: all it takes is a simple decision and dedication on a daily basis.

Simple daily disciplines will add up over time into massive results.

Your Task

With every post in this Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur series, I will be providing you with a task for you to think about after finishing this post up.

Today, you have all of the resources to go out and go from wantrepreneur to entrepreneur!

Conclusion

No one is an overnight success. We only see the success at the end of the day, but rarely do we see the grind.

We don’t see the late nights at the computer and definitely aren’t at the same coffee shop at 6 am to get in some hours before work!

I’ve given you 10 free resources in this Wantrepreneurship to Entrepreneurship series. Now, you have the knowledge to go create something great!

I hope you succeed beyond your wildest dreams, and I’m excited to see you on TV in 5 years.

All I ask is you shoot me an email when you’ve finally done it! 🙂

Readers: are you going to wake up an overnight success in 5 years? Are you willing to grind for the next 1500+ days? Are you willing to take that risk?

  1. TMW,
These series posts are butt-kickers! Every night after I put my kids to bed I want to go right to sleep. 4-5 of those nights I go right to the computer to work on my hustle. Been doing that for 4.5 years. And I’m still not a huge success, but I have created a real income stream outside of my full-time job.

I’m 42 now. If I had your attitude when I was 25, who knows where I’d be. You intentionality will bring you the success you desire, but it may take a while.

I really appreciate your kind words Retire Before Dad 🙂

4.5 years and you’ve created a real income stream, that’s success to me! Have a great Friday!

  2. You’re right that success doesn’t come overnight and we must work at it and keep on pushing ourselves until we made it. The important thing that I often remind myself is my own success comes from the amount of work that I am putting in. I also set goals for myself to motivate and to keep myself on track.

I will definitely be looking forward to reading your success story in five years. Let me take a while guess, you will retire before 30?

  3. With that kind of mentality and work ethic, coupled with knowledge and persistence. You will definitely be on your way to retirement at age 40 or even younger. Stay on the right path.

    Wish you the best.

  4. Can’t wait until we’re both overnight successes in 5, 10, 15, or 20 years. I’ll fly to your vacation pad, and you can fly to ours to play a round of golf here and there. I’m with you for the long haul, friend.

  5. Very motivating! I look forward to seeing you reach new heights in the next 5 years. You’ve already accomplished a lot as I’ve read and that in itself is motivation to push the envelope more. 🙂

  6. Such an important message! Success is like an iceberg that floats on tons of failures in the past. The nice thing is that persistence is something everyone can do. It’s just a matter of taking daily action as you say. Keep up the great content!

  7. I read “So Good They Can’t Ignore You” by Cal Newport in one sitting this week. It really blew me away. You know when you read something and know, immediately, that it will have a long-lasting and profound impact on you?

That’s the way I felt a few years back, when I first read Mr Money Mustache’s posts on index investing, which I immediately applied and have not abandoned.

And it’s the way I felt when I read about deliberate practice in Cal Newport’s book. It immediately struck me. The one thing I’ve been bad at is deliberate practice. I have these goals and dreams, but when it comes time to do the work, I’m not as consistent, and I’m easily distracted.

I made the decision then and there that deliberate practice will be a major part of my day, every day.

This post resonates with me directly, and with the idea of deliberate practice.

Success is always glorified, but no one ever pays attention to the road there. It’s always as if the successful person just somehow appeared there.

Hey Andrew, thanks for the comment!

The book that I read that had a similar impact on me was The Slight Edge and really, it’s the same sort of concept: consistent effort over time doing the right things will result in wild success.

It’s not so much that you have to be a genius or have to be in the 1% of talents. Working a little bit each and every day, looking to get better, and going down various rabbit holes will bring you to success!

Now, I don’t take days off, and if I do, it’s a planned event and something I have been working towards!

Have a good one Andrew 🙂
