Welcome to the twentieth monthly, eighth of 2018, Blog Traffic and Income Report for The Mastermind Within! Each month, I post the traffic statistics and income The Mastermind Within blog has earned and comment on any changes, improvements, and disappointments.
I want to be as transparent as possible, because I believe true improvement can happen only when you get the raw details of a situation.
This post will take the following form: first, a recap of the various posts written throughout the month. Second, the traffic and income statistics which are gathered from Google Analytics and the various affiliate and ad networks The Mastermind Within takes part in. Third, I will discuss what changes or strategies I have for the next month, September 2018, to try to grow traffic and make money.
As always, any and all feedback is gladly welcomed. I know that I don’t know everything about blogging. (not even close)

August 2018 Post Summary
In August, I met my goal of posting 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays.
In August, The Mastermind Within had 15 posts. During the months of March, April, May, and July, I picked a certain topic and wrote content only on that topic. I really liked that idea and went back to it for the month of August. This past month, I wrote mostly about entrepreneurship and side hustling! Here are all of this month’s posts:
- Personal Development
- Personal Finance
- Blog Traffic and Income Report – July 2018
- What is Side Hustling and Why I Side Hustle
- What’s the Best Side Hustle? (It’s Not What You Expect)
- My $42,000 Side Hustle – How House Hacking Changed My Life
- Why Blogging is My Favorite Side Hustle
- What 6 Months of Podcasting Looks Like
- Creating a Physical Product is Difficult
- Should You Do the Work Yourself or Outsource it?
- Designing a Simple Home Page for Better User Experience
- How I Make $85 an Hour Doing Statistical Consulting
- Introducing The Simple Minded Millennial Podcast!
I loved shared all that’s going on in my life and hope it inspired you to do better in your life.
August was the seventh month of The Mastermind Within Podcast and I’m really loving it. In June, I thought about quitting, but have been re-energized as of late. It’s also been growing which has been awesome to see!
In August, I published 4 episodes:
- Preparing for Financial Storms featuring Andrei Polgar – Episode 28
- Practicing Minimalism to Build a Better Business with Jack the Dreamer – Episode 29
- Win with Your Personal Finances featuring Jason from Winning Personal Finance – Episode 30
- Fasting, Side Hustles, and a BIG Announcement – Episode 31
I’ve been trying to show more personality and silliness as of late. It’s definitely been a great experience and I’m glad I started.
Many podcasts look to highlight awesome people doing awesome things. Most of those podcasts just stop at the what though – and don’t dig into the how and why. On The Mastermind Within podcast, I’m looking to really dig into the strategies and tactics which are being applied by these impressive individuals.
I’m seeing some growth as you’ll see in the statistics section below. Exciting times ahead!
I had a few guest appearances in August – 2 guest posts and 1 podcast interview! 🙂
On August 17th, I was all over John’s sites (ESI Money and Rockstar Finance). On ESI Money, I had a guest post about what I’m calling The Paradox of Side Hustling. A short summary is the skills you gain to leave your job by side hustling result in providing more value in your day job and lead to raises you might not have wanted in the first place!
On Rockstar Finance, I participated in a Money Match-up with My Money Wizard. These Money Match-ups are posts where 2 bloggers take sides on a personal finance question and debate. Our question was, “is it better to focus on increasing your income or cutting your expenses for building wealth?” I was on the increasing income side. Check out our Money Match-up post.
Sometime later, I had a podcast episode go live on the Countdown to FI podcast, where I talked about my thoughts on investing and entrepreneurship. After writing a bunch of seemingly alternative thoughts on investing and personal finance in July, my tune has changed about some of my strategies and I had to share this with them.
In September, I don’t have anything planned for guest posts or interviews. Any thoughts on where I should try to get a post or podcast?
Next… on to the numbers! August was a decent month.
August 2018 Blog Statistics
In August 2018, the blog had 10,115 page views and I made $64.55!! Big money!! (Not close to retiring off of this 😉 ) This represents a decrease of 12% in viewership month over month.

August 2018 Traffic and Income Report
Here’s August 2018’s income report. I’ve broken this out into income and I’ve also included expenses, so you can get a better understanding of the costs associated with running a blog.
In August, I made $64.55 from the blog, and net income for the month was $11.36.
MyFinance dropped me because I’m not making $500 a month. It sucks but they are a business and want to focus in on the big players. What is stupid though is that they gave a few days notice and then I couldn’t even log in to their site to see if I made any money in August. Oh well.
Here’s some additional statistics on my email list and social media accounts:
We set a new record for podcast downloads at 798! I love to see growth in these endeavors since I do spend a lot of time making sure I’m producing good content for my fellow masterminds.
One thing I’d like to mention here, is you’ll see my email subscribers is not growing. Actually it is, I delete subscribers who go “cold” in the ConverKit back end (people who don’t open emails after 30 days). I only want to send emails to people who actually care and want to read this blog.
As I mentioned, the email list is growing. I’m getting about 100 new subscribers a month, but many people just come for the freebies and aren’t finding what they want I guess. I need to do a little bit more work on nurturing and providing value to get them to stick around 🙁
For those of you on my email list, thank you! I’m incredibly glad I’m able to reach people with my content and hopefully I’m making a difference in your life in some way.
If you are on my email list, I hope you have used and enjoyed the freebies you get when you sign up!
Acquisition and Other Commentary
I took quite a few L’s in August it seems. (L stands for loss)
On August 1st, a new Google search algorithm went into affect and my traffic took a hit. Combined with the fact that in August many people are vacationing didn’t help matters.
Search engine traffic is my main driver, and this was down 30% in August.
Just like in personal finance, this showed me first hand that MULTIPLE INCOME STREAMS are the key. While I haven’t been focusing on Quora and Pinterest as much, I still have my email list and other areas where I can promote posts to get traffic.
This month was very challenging. There were multiple times where I sat at my desk and asked myself questions like:
- “Why am I spending so much time on this blog? It’s not growing.”
- “The podcast is growing, should you focus more on that?”
- “Am I stupid for not doing Pinterest more?”
- “Should I stop posting 3 times a week?”
Doubts creep in, but I’m staying consistent. At the end of the year, I’m going to reassess my content strategy. I want to get 156 posts this year (3 posts a week), just to prove to myself I can stick with something for an entire year. Maybe this is a good strategy and maybe it isn’t – I guess we will see!
I’m interested to see how the next 4 months pan out. Now that summer is done, more people will return back to their computers and should be searching more and more for different topics. With how this blog is positioned currently, I should experience some nice growth… but we will see! It’s been a fun experiment and I’m not slowing down anytime soon!
I’ve also shown a picture here of the acquisition statistics from this month and last month. You’ll see that search engine traffic (organic search) is still the main driver.
While this is good, it’s like personal finance, where the goal is to diversify your traffic streams so if one goes dry, you’ll still be able to drive traffic.
Concluding Thoughts from August
August was a little bit of a downer on the blog, but the podcast is growing! I’m excited to see where we go in the coming months.
I’m absolutely loving writing, podcasting, and interacting with you, my reader. If you appreciate what I’m doing, the best thing to do is just send an email saying thanks. I don’t make much from this blog at this point and just do it out of the love for self improvement and helping others.
I’m excited for the rest of 2018 – by staying consistent, let’s keep this train humming!

Action Steps for September 2018
Consistency is the key to blogging. I can’t just go hard 8 months and expect to make thousands of dollars. It’s an every day, every week, every month process. I have to grind, write, promote, grind some more, and eventually, it will be where I want it to be.
This month, I just want to stay consistent. I made some solid gains in the last 8 months, but really, I’m still not doing all that great.
In September, I’m going to be writing about personal finance and self improvement – but mostly some random accomplishments and fun things that I’ve been doing in my life 🙂
All of my work and writing is inspired and guided by The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:
The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:
The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.
Community is always on my mind. It’s not enough to be a keyboard warrior if you want success. True success and happiness comes from your community and surrounding yourself with amazing people and friends.
That’s why I will be featuring many successful individuals on my podcast in the coming weeks and months. I’m really excited to get that rolling and tap into another market of masterminds!
August was solid and I hope to continue this in the second half of 2018.
