Welcome to the nineteenth monthly, seventh of 2018, Blog Traffic and Income Report for The Mastermind Within! Each month, I post the traffic statistics and income The Mastermind Within blog has earned and comment on any changes, improvements, and disappointments.
I want to be as transparent as possible, because I believe true improvement can happen only when you get the raw details of a situation.
This post will take the following form: first, a recap of the various posts written throughout the month. Second, the traffic and income statistics which are gathered from Google Analytics and the various affiliate and ad networks The Mastermind Within takes part in. Third, I will discuss what changes or strategies I have for the next month, July 2018, to try to grow traffic and make money.
As always, any and all feedback is gladly welcomed. I know that I don’t know everything about blogging. (not even close)

July 2018 Post Summary
In July, I met my goal of posting 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays.
In July, The Mastermind Within had 13 posts. During the months of March, April, and May, I picked a certain topic and wrote content only on that topic. I really liked that idea and went back to it for the month of July. This past month, I wrote mostly about personal finance, the financial markets, and investing:
- Personal Development
- Personal Finance
- The Earth is a Closed System
- What is Money?
- Capitalism, Marxist Thought, Post Capitalism: An Overview of Economic Systems
- An Easy to Understand Guide to Banking for Non-Bankers
- What Does it Actually Mean to Invest in Stocks?
- Check Your Investing Privilege
- All Assets are Worth Considering (and Owning) for Financial Success
- The Problem with Index Fund Investing
- Why the Stock Market Cannot Always Go Up
- Better to be a Year Early than an Hour Late
I learned a ton in July, and it was one of the most difficult months for me because I was mentally challenging myself in ways I hadn’t challenged myself before!
July was the sixth month of The Mastermind Within Podcast and I’m enjoying it. In June, I thought about quitting, but have been re-energized as of late.
In July, I published 5 episodes:
- Networking, Hedge Fund Life, and Blogging with Chelsea from Mama Fish Saves – Episode 23
- Creating a Financial Waterfall through Side Hustling with Cody from Fly to FI – Episode 24
- Personal Development to Financial Freedom featuring Half Life Theory – Episode 25
- Overcoming Financial Troubles and Becoming Financially Woke with Peerless Money Mentor – Episode 26
- Does More School or a Career Pivot Make More Sense? with Simplistic Steph – Episode 27
Many podcasts look to highlight awesome people doing awesome things. Most of those podcasts just stop at the what though – and don’t dig into the how and why. On The Mastermind Within podcast, I’m looking to really dig into the strategies and tactics which are being applied by these impressive individuals.
I’m seeing some growth as you’ll see in the statistics section below. Exciting times ahead!
I had a few guest appearances in July – 1 guest posts and 1 podcast interview! 🙂
In the beginning of July, I had a guest post go live for my fellow Minnesotan blogger Cubert, where I talked about how Life is Not a Clickable Link.
Sometime later, I had a podcast episode go live on the Do You Even Blog podcast with my friend Pete, where I talked about a number of things: consistent efforts adding up over time, combating the fear of failure (or is it the fear of success?), podcasting and blogging! It was a great chat! 🙂
In August, I have a two guest posts going live as of now – I’m definitely excited for these!
Next… on to the numbers! July was another solid month!
July 2018 Blog Statistics
In July 2018, the blog had 11,433 page views and I made $117.62!! Big money!! (Not close to retiring off of this 😉 ) This represents a solid increase of 3% in viewership month over month.
July 2018 Google Analytics Summary
I’m hopeful 10,000 page views is our new monthly floor, and this will be a launching pad for the second half of 2018! 10,000+ page views in April, May, and June were huge milestones and I’m incredibly happy to see us pass that again.
July 2018 Traffic and Income Report
Here’s July 2018’s income report. I’ve broken this out into income and I’ve also included expenses, so you can get a better understanding of the costs associated with running a blog.
In July, I made $117.62 from the blog, and net income for the month was $20.83
You can see I had a decent month from MyFinance (which 50% gets taken in fees), and I also had 1 piece of sponsored content shown on the site.
Here’s some additional statistics on my email list and social media accounts:
We set a new record for podcast downloads at 698! I love to see growth in these endeavors since I do spend a lot of time making sure I’m producing good content for my fellow masterminds.
One thing I’d like to mention here, is you’ll see my email subscribers is not growing. Actually it is, I delete subscribers who go “cold” in the ConverKit back end (people who don’t open emails after 30 days). I only want to send emails to people who actually care and want to read this blog. Here is the net subscriber growth over time for The Mastermind Within:
As I mentioned, the email list is growing. I’m getting about 100 new subscribers a month, but many people just come for the freebies and don’t want to learn more. Their loss!
For those of you on my email list, thank you! I’m incredibly glad I’m able to reach people with my content and hopefully I’m making a difference in your life in some way.
If you are on my email list, I hope you have used and enjoyed the freebies you get when you sign up!
Acquisition and Other Commentary
On the acquisition front, search engine traffic is picking up in a big way. I’m very pleased with that, and it shows that while yes, SEO and making your website search engine friendly is tough, it will pay off in the future.
I had a few days with over 200 (!!!) search engine hits, and don’t see that slowing down anytime soon. Here is a picture of the last 19 months for search engine traffic. This is my main driver of traffic (somewhat unfortunate though, because my email list has decent size but not everyone clicks over to read).
Here’s a great resource for you to learn more about SEO.
Quora, Pinterest, and email list traffic have been interesting to watch. I’ve been pinning roughly 10 times a day on Pinterest, and got back on Quora, but the main driver is still search engine traffic.
I’m trying to push on these 3 fronts, and hopefully something will stick as I’m just trying to stay consistent as time goes on. Here are these channels by acquisition to show the randomness and growth:
I’m interested to see how the next 5 months pan out. Now that summer is starting to wind down, more people will return back to their computers and should be searching more and more for different topics. With how this blog is positioned currently, I should experience some nice growth… but we will see! It’s been a fun experiment and I’m not slowing down anytime soon!
I’ve also shown a picture here of the acquisition statistics from this month and last month. You’ll see that search engine traffic (organic search) is still the main driver.
While this is good, it’s like personal finance, where the goal is to diversify your traffic streams so if one goes dry, you’ll still be able to drive traffic.
Concluding Thoughts from July
July was a solid month traffic wise because of a few guest posts and consistent efforts adding up over time in the search engine department.
The podcast is growing, the blog is growing, and we are just about to go parabolic 😉 (though any predictions I can make will be bogus – past performance doesn’t guarantee future results!)
I’m absolutely loving writing, and interacting with you, my reader.
I’m loving how I’m spending my time, and I’m excited for the rest of 2018 – by staying consistent, the train will keep humming!
My schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Friday is working well. Look forward to the continuation of great content!

Action Steps for August 2018
Consistency is the key to blogging. I can’t just go hard 6 months and expect to make thousands of dollars. It’s an every day, every week, every month process. I have to grind, write, promote, grind some more, and eventually, it will be where I want it to be.
This month, I just want to stay consistent. I made some solid gains in the last 7 months, but really, I’m still not doing all that great.
In August, I’m going to be writing about side hustles – going to talk about my side hustles, feature a guest post about side hustling, and talk about how you can get into side hustling yoursel to make some extra bucks.
All of my work and writing is inspired and guided by The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:
The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:
The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.
Community is always on my mind. It’s not enough to be a keyboard warrior if you want success. True success and happiness comes from your community and surrounding yourself with amazing people and friends.
That’s why I will be featuring many successful individuals on my podcast in the coming weeks and months. I’m really excited to get that rolling and tap into another market of masterminds!
July was solid and I hope to continue this in the second half of 2018.
