Blog Income and Traffic Report – September 2018

Erik Entrepreneurship, Side Hustle, Thoughts of a Mastermind 7 Comments

Welcome to the twenty-first monthly, ninth of 2018, Blog Traffic and Income Report for The Mastermind Within! Each month, I post the traffic statistics and income The Mastermind Within blog has earned and comment on any changes, improvements, and disappointments. This is a recap of sorts for what I’m talking about, what I should be focusing on, and anything I can change.

My primary goals with this site is to help people, like yourself, with a secondary goal to make it an income stream.

In this report, I want to be as transparent as possible, because I believe true improvement can happen only when you get the raw details of a situation.

This post will take the following form: first, a recap of the various posts written throughout the month. Second, the traffic and income statistics which are gathered from Google Analytics and the various affiliate and ad networks The Mastermind Within takes part in. Third, I will discuss what changes or strategies I have for the next month, October 2018, to try to grow traffic and make money.

As always, any and all feedback is gladly welcomed. I know that I don’t know everything about blogging. (not even close)

September 2018 Post Summary

In September, I missed my goal of posting 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays by one post, but still got more than 11 pieces of content done.

In September, The Mastermind Within had 11 posts. During the months of March, April, May, July, and August, I picked a certain topic and wrote content only on that topic. This month, I was all over the board in the categories of personal development, personal finance, and entrepreneurship. Here are all of this month’s posts:

I loved shared all that’s going on in my life and hope it inspired you to do better in your life.

Podcast Episodes

September was the eighth month of The Mastermind Within Podcast and I decided it was time to take a break. I wasn’t putting my all into it and need to refocus here in October.

In September, I published 3 episodes:

I may bring this back in 2019. For now, I’m looking to see what’s essential and focus in on growing those critical things.

I also just started a new podcast, The Simple Minded Millennial podcast which I’m loving – all about getting Millennials to success through mindfulness and simplicity.

There are 34 great episodes still out there for this podcast. If you are an iTunes or Stitcher person, The Mastermind Within Podcast is on those channels!

Guest Appearances

I had one guest appearance in September – 1 Facebook Live! 🙂

I joined Gwen from the FIRE Drill Podcast to talk about a bunch of things on their weekly Facebook Live. We chatted about increasing my income, side hustling, dating, and a bunch of other random topics 🙂 It was great!

In October, I don’t have anything planned for guest posts or interviews. Any thoughts on where I should try to get a post or podcast?

Next… on to the numbers! September was an interesting month.

September 2018 Blog Statistics

In September 2018, the blog had 9,002 page views and I made $240.02!! A new record! This represents a decrease of 11% in viewership month over month.

September 2018 Google Analytics Summary

Below is taken from my Google Analytics account for this blog to show you the traffic statistics for the site.

Another decrease in traffic but I have some plans to get that back up 🙂

September 2018 Traffic and Income Report

Here’s September 2018’s income report. I’ve broken this out into income and I’ve also included expenses, so you can get a better understanding of the costs associated with running a blog.

In August, I made $240.02 from the blog, and net income for the month was $186.83. These are both new records!

I hosted a few pieces of sponsored content (i.e. ads) on this site and was compensated for it 🙂

Here’s some additional statistics on my email list and social media accounts:

This is interesting. While my social media accounts, email subscribers, and name is all getting out there into the world, I’m not growing in terms of traffic. At the same time, do I care if I’m able to make $100+ a month? That’s $1,000 a year if sustained. Is this what I want? How should I think about this?

This blog is an experiment to see if I can build an income stream online. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and will be sharing with your those thoughts in the next section.

Email subscribers, thank you! I’m incredibly glad I’m able to reach people with my content and hopefully I’m making a difference in your life in some way.

Acquisition and Other Commentary

On August 1st, a new Google search algorithm went into affect and my traffic took a hit. This has been the main contributor to the 10%+ decrease in traffic in the last two months.

Just like in personal finance, this showed me first hand that MULTIPLE INCOME STREAMS are the key. While I haven’t been focusing on Quora and Pinterest as much, I still have my email list and other areas where I can promote posts to get traffic.

This month was very challenging. There were multiple times where I sat at my desk and had doubting thoughts.

I’ve also shown a picture here of the acquisition statistics from this month and last month. You’ll see that search engine traffic (organic search) is still the main driver.

While this is good, it’s like personal finance, where the goal is to diversify your traffic streams so if one goes dry, you’ll still be able to drive traffic.

At the end of the day though, I’m dedicated to helping others; helping you with your personal finance and self improvement journey.

One thing I implemented in September was hiring a Pinterest VA. She is going to help with making my pins, scheduling them out, and interacting with others on Pinterest.

I have limited time. With a growing blog and also a growing income at my day job, I should look to leverage my money and time by hiring others.

In the coming weeks as well, I’m going to look to see who you are by running a survey. I want to focus in on exactly what kind of issues, problems and struggles you are having in your life.

Concluding Thoughts from September

September didn’t bring the traffic results I’d like, but the money was there! I’m excited to see where we go in the coming months.

I’m absolutely loving writing, podcasting, and interacting with you, my reader. If you appreciate what I’m doing, the best thing to do is just send an email saying thanks. I don’t make much from this blog at this point and just do it out of the love for self improvement and helping others.

I’m excited for the rest of 2018 – by staying consistent, let’s keep this train humming!

Action Steps for October 2018

Consistency is the key to blogging. I can’t just give up because the traffic numbers aren’t there. It’s an every day, every week, every month process. I have to grind, write, promote, grind some more, and eventually, it will be where I want it to be.

This month, I have a bunch of ideas I’m going to implement. IDEAS are WORTHLESS without ACTION. I made some solid gains in the last 9 months, but really, I’m still not doing all that great on this site.

In October, I’m going to be writing about my recent experience at a blogging conference and my takeaways, create a survey for you and me to interact a little more with, and also do some more technical work to get the best posts out into the open.

All of my work and writing is inspired and guided by The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

Community is always on my mind. It’s not enough to be a keyboard warrior if you want success. True success and happiness comes from your community and surrounding yourself with amazing people and friends.

That’s why I will be featuring many successful individuals on my podcast in the coming weeks and months. I’m really excited to get that rolling and tap into another market of masterminds!

September was solid and I hope to continue this in the last quarter of 2018.

  1. Great post and awesome job with the blog. I don’t think your numbers are low at all for only being in the game 9 months.

I have a question about sponsored posts. How do you find those opportunities? Do companies reach out to you or do you seek them out? I want to dip my feet in but don’t know where to start.

This is my 21st month, not my 9th month 🙂

For sponsored posts or content, there are some companies and/or agencies that line you up with other companies. So some of its direct and some of its through these sorts of connections.

      Thanks for stopping by Melanie!

  2. Hey Erik, that is awesome to have your biggest month in revenue! Goes to show pageviews aren’t everything! Your GOAL is to make money, not become an influencer or get popular. Focus on profit instead of popularity 🙂 and if you focus on that, you’re crushing your goals! your income has steadily increased, which is awesome!

  3. This is awesome, Erik!

I’ve been seeing your progression and you’re doing really well! I can see that you’re focusing your efforts on Google SEO which is really REALLY smart! My gut tells me that you’re going to make it big with your valuable and helpful content!

I’ve been behind with organic traffic and it’s something I seriously need to start learning.

Again, congratulations on your progress! Definitely keep it up!

  4. This is great info. Thank you for sharing! It looks like you’re doing all the right things and we know persistence is the way to win this game, so keep it up!
