THIS POST MAY CONTAIN PAID AND/OR AFFILIATE LINKS.

Welcome to the sixteenth monthly, and fourth of 2018, Blog Traffic and Income Report for The Mastermind Within! Each month, I post the traffic statistics and income The Mastermind Within blog has earned and comment on any changes, improvements, and disappointments. I want to be as transparent as possible, because true improvement can happen only when you get the raw details of a situation.

This post will take the following form: first, a recap of the various posts written throughout the month. Second, the traffic and income statistics which are gathered from Google Analytics and the various affiliate and ad networks The Mastermind Within takes part in. Third, I will discuss what changes or strategies I have for the next month, March 2018, to try to grow traffic and make money. As always, any and all feedback is gladly welcomed. I know that I don’t know everything about blogging. (not even close)

April 2018 Post Summary

In April I did very well posting. I met my goal of posting 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays.

In April, The Mastermind Within had 12 posts. April is Financial Literacy Month in the United States, and I was inspired to share some of my story and greatest tips for financial success. As a result, all of my posts were personal finance related (outside of the usual check-ins).

I loved writing and sharing my thoughts on the subject of personal finance, and many of you agreed! Some of my most viewed posts on the month were asymmetric bets to build extreme wealth, my spending habits reveal, and how I reached $165,000 in net worth at age 25.

Podcast Episodes

April was the third month of The Mastermind Within Podcast! I wish I had started this podcast earlier… it’s so much fun, and a great way to learn and grow as an individual.

After recording, I end up going back, listening, and then editing each episode to ensure it makes sense and the sound quality is solid.

In April, there were 4 episodes:

Many podcasts look to highlight awesome people doing awesome things. Most of those podcasts just stop at the what though – and don’t dig into the how and why. On The Mastermind Within podcast, I’m looking to really dig into the strategies and tactics which are being applied by these impressive individuals.

If you are an iTunes or Stitcher person, The Mastermind Within Podcast is on those channels as well!

Guest Appearances

I had two guest appearances in April.

My first guest post was How The Pursuit of Financial Independence Got Me a Girlfriend. In the article I share how last summer, I ended up going on a second date in Vegas after meeting a girl who was also saving a bunch of money and doing this crazy blogging thing. I also talk about risk and the real reason you need an emergency fund 🙂

My second guest post was an interview on Debt Discipline.  In April, for Financial Literacy Month, Brian, the owner of Debt Discipline, ran a number of interview articles featuring great personal finance bloggers. I talked about my money epiphany in college and shared some of my best personal finance tips.

Also notable, I was featured on Camp FIRE Finance twice for the following posts and podcasts:

Ty , the owner of Camp FIRE Finance, is doing a great job curating awesome content over there!.

In May, I have a few guest posts going live – I’m definitely excited for these!

Next… on to the numbers! APRIL WAS A RECORD SETTING MONTH!!!!

April 2018 Blog Statistics

In April 2018, the blog had 10,750 page views and I made $167.70!! Big money!! (Getting closer to retiring off of this 😉 ) This represents a solid increase of 42% in viewership month over month.

April 2018 Google Analytics Summary

10,000+ page views is a HUGE milestone and I’m incredibly happy to see this come. 16 months of blogging, and I’ve finally hit 5 figure page views in a month… it’s crazy how what started out as something getting 1,000 page views a month grew into something much bigger.

April 2018 Traffic and Income Report

Here’s April 2018’s income report. I’ve broken this out into income and I’ve also included expenses, so you can get a better understanding of the costs associated with running a blog.

In April, I made $167.70 from the blog, and net income for the month was $84.39 – a new record for revenue and income!!

You can see I had a big month from MyFinance (which 50% gets taken in fees), and I also had 2 pieces of sponsored content shown on the site.

A thought I want to get out here: Google Adsense is a joke… I wish I didn’t have it. That being said, I’m potentially a few months from actually getting a payout, so I’ll keep those ads on the site going until then.

Here’s some additional statistics on my email list and social media accounts:

Acquisition and Other Commentary

blog income report April 2018 acquisitionOn the acquisition front, search engine traffic is picking up in a big way. I’m very pleased with that, and it shows that while yes, SEO and making your website search engine friendly is tough, it will pay off in the future.

I had a few days with over 150 (!!!) search engine hits, and don’t see that slowing down anytime soon.

Regarding Pinterest, my pins are becoming a little better with each iteration, and I’m confident I’m on the right path – for some reason, it’s just not sticking yet. Maybe more group boards? Maybe the tool Boardbooster? I don’t know. 10-15 referrals a day isn’t going to cut it.

On Quora, another one of my traffic generators in the past, I haven’t answered a question in over a month. I’m a little less bullish on the platform, but what is funny is I was named a Top Writer for 2018!!

This means I’m sort of a big deal on Quora (even though I still don’t really know what it means past the nice badge I have on my profile 🙂 )

Going forward into May, I’m interested to see what happens on Pinterest, get back into answering on Quora, and finally, see how Google continues to treat me 🙂

Concluding Thoughts from April

April was a fantastic month traffic wise because of a few guest posts, a number of great posts on the topic of Financial Literacy, and consistent efforts adding up over time in the search engine and Pinterest department.

I’m absolutely loving blogging, writing, and interacting with you, my reader. I really enjoy writing, inspiring, and putting my thoughts into the world.

There were a ton of great emails some of the readers of The Mastermind Within sent me, and I loved reading and responding to them.

I’m loving how I’m spending my time, and I’m excited for the rest of 2018 – by staying consistent, the train will keep humming! My schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Friday is working well. Look forward to the continuation of great content!

Action Steps for May 2018

Consistency is the key to blogging. I can’t just go hard 6 months and expect to make thousands of dollars. It’s an every day, every week, every month process. I have to grind, write, promote, grind some more, and eventually, it will be where I want it to be.

This month, I just want to stay consistent. I made some solid gains in the last 5 months, but really, I’m just getting started.

That being said, I’m not sure what I want to write about in May. In March, I wrote only posts on entrepreneurship in our “Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur” series. In April, it was Financial Literacy Month in the United States and as you saw above, I only posted about personal finance.

I really like diving into a topic and writing a number of posts all on the same subject, but I’m not sure what subject makes most sense for you (or me).

A few ideas… I’d love to hear your take on this:

  • How to become a better learner
    • Dive into the skill of learning, use this knowledge to apply it to learning a new skill, and share with you my progress here on the blog
  • General Self Improvement Tips
    • Similar to the last two months, but this time a self improvement themed series. A few topics I would touch on would be the abundance mindset, tips for removing noise in your life, different efficiency hacks I’ve applied in my life, and more on the concept of consistent efforts leading to wild success over time.
  • Web Design and Development tips
    • One of my new found passions is web development and web design. I’d love to spend a month covering the basics of HTML, CSS, Javascript, the DOM, and other web design topics to help your business or blog’s website.
  • More personal finance tips
    • I still have a few more unique subjects I didn’t touch on in April, and also could go into more detail on a lot of what I talked about this last month

I’d love it if you could let me know what you’d like to see in the comments below OR via email.

All of my work and writing is inspired and guided by The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

Community is always on my mind. It’s not enough to be a keyboard warrior if you want success. True success and happiness comes from your community and surrounding yourself with amazing people and friends.

That’s why I will be featuring many successful individuals on my podcast in the coming weeks and months. I’m really excited to get that rolling and tap into another market of masterminds!

April was a record setting month, but I’m excited because this is just the start.

Readers: What tips, tricks, and suggestions could you share with me to improve The Mastermind Within? What should I write about in May?

Thanks Brian! Thank you for featuring me on your site – looking forward to hopefully seeing you at FinCon! 🙂

  1. Big month Erik. You are certainly moving in the right direction.

I’m hoping to crack the 5 figure view mark too. I’m only in month 10 of my site though and need to get the search stuff working.

Thanks Jason! 🙂 I’m excited to see where I go in the next few months… hopefully it goes parabolic as I continue to optimize and make things better.

It’s a great learning process and it’s fun to actually get some results!!

      Have a good one

  2. Congrats on hitting 10K page views! That’s an awesome accomplishment and way to go getting those big bucks in blog income 😉

Excited to see when you double this and get to 20K page views 🙂

Thanks Young FIRE Knight 🙂 I’m hoping it will be this month for 20k 😉 haha

In all seriousness, as long as I stay consistent, I think 20k views will come soon enough.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Nicely done. Glad that Pinterest is off and running (listened to that podcast – something I have vigorously resisted but really need to do) – will be interested to see impact once that’s a big contributor. Keep it up!

Thanks Paul 🙂 It will be interesting to see the results, as some people get 100s of referrals a day from Pinterest…

Thanks Tom! Regarding sponsored content, there are different firms that reach out, or you can search to see and figure out if they are a good fit. Honestly, I’m on the fence about it.
