THIS POST MAY CONTAIN PAID AND/OR AFFILIATE LINKS.

Welcome to the fifteenth monthly, and third of 2018, Blog Traffic and Income Report for The Mastermind Within! Each month, I post the traffic statistics and income The Mastermind Within blog has earned and comment on any changes, improvements, and disappointments. I want to be as transparent as possible, because true improvement can happen only when you get the raw details of a situation.

This post will take the following form: first, a recap of the various posts written throughout the month. Second, the traffic and income statistics which are gathered from Google Analytics and the various affiliate and ad networks The Mastermind Within takes part in. Third, I will discuss what changes or strategies I have for the next month, March 2018, to try to grow traffic and make money. As always, any and all feedback is gladly welcomed. I know that I don’t know everything about blogging. (not even close)

March 2018 Post Summary

In March, I did very well posting. I met my goal of posting 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays.

In March, The Mastermind Within had 12 posts. I made March “Wantrepreuneur to Entrepreneur” month, and as a result, 11 of the posts were on entrepreneurship.

Podcast Episodes

March was the second month of The Mastermind Within Podcast! I wish I had started this podcast earlier… it’s so much fun, and a great way to learn and grow as an individual.

After recording, I end up going back, listening, and then editing each episode to ensure it makes sense and the sound quality is solid.

In March, there were 4 episodes:

Many podcasts look to highlight awesome people doing awesome things. Most of those podcasts just stop at the what though – and don’t dig into the how and why. On The Mastermind Within podcast, I’m looking to really dig into the strategies and tactics which are being applied by these impressive individuals.

If you are an iTunes or Stitcher person, The Mastermind Within Podcast is on those channels as well!

Guest Appearances

I was featured on the Chain of Wealth podcast in March where I talked about blogging, Quora, and some of my favorite books. This was my second podcast interview this year and I’m on my way to reaching my goal of 5 interviews 🙂

Check it out here: My Interview on Chain of Wealth.

In April, I have 2 guest posts going live – I’m definitely excited for these!

Next… on to the numbers! March was just alright.

March 2018 Blog Statistics

In March 2018, the blog had 7,556 page views and I made $27.09!! Big money!! (You think I can retire off this? It’s getting there!) This represents a slight decrease of 7% in viewership month over month.

Honestly, this was kind of expected. Many people come to The Mastermind Within for personal finance and financial freedom. To get to financial freedom, I’m looking to hustle and build businesses along the way and as a result, entrepreneurship is a fun topic to write about.

Over the last year, I’ve had some experiences and learned a lot about business and wanted to share this with you. Since your interests are probably more finance related, then it makes sense why traffic is down; business isn’t an interest of yours and that’s totally okay!

April is Financial Literacy Month and I won’t let you down with some great finance posts 🙂

March 2018 Traffic and Income Report

First, I’ll show you 2017’s blog traffic and income report as a starting point because it’s a good reminder of where we have came from. (I’ll stop showing 2017 after this report)

Now, here’s March 2018’s income report. I’ve broken this out in 2 reports. In addition, I’ve included expenses, so you can get a better understanding of the costs associated with running this blog (and you’ll see some new statistics for the podcast!!)

In March, I made $27.09 from the blog. All of this is still very low, and I need more traffic.

Finally, I included costs for hosting, ConvertKit, and any other miscellaneous fees. I had my first payment for the podcasting hosting fees of $20 a month, which is now included.

Net income for the month was -$32.05.

Here’s some additional statistics on my email list and social media accounts:

For those of you on my email list, thank you! I’m incredibly glad I’m able to reach people with my content and hopefully I’m making a difference on your life in some way.

Acquisition and Other Commentary

On the acquisition front, search engine traffic is picking up in a big way. I’m very pleased with that, and it shows that while yes, SEO and making your website search engine friendly is tough, it will pay off in the future.

I had a few days with over 100 search engine hits, and don’t see that slowing down anytime soon.

Regarding Pinterest, my pins are becoming a little better with each iteration, and I’m confident I’m on the right path – for some reason, it’s just not sticking yet. Maybe more group boards? Maybe the tool Boardbooster? I don’t know. 10-15 referrals a day isn’t going to cut it.

On Quora, another one of my traffic generators, I went a little bit stagnant. I’m a little less bullish on the platform, but what is funny is I was named a Top Writer for 2018!!

This means I’m sort of a big deal on Quora (even though I still don’t really know what it means past the nice badge I have on my profile 🙂 )

Going forward into April, I’m excited to see what happens on Pinterest, get back into answering on Quora, and finally, see how Google continues to treat me 🙂

Concluding Thoughts from March

The first 3 months of 2018 have been quite the whirlwind.

There are days I wake up and I think to myself, “Why am I doing all of this? $27 revenue after spending how many hours this month writing and podcasting? What are you doing with your life?”

I don’t really know, but I’m having fun.

I really enjoy writing, inspiring, and putting my thoughts into the world.

Even though my progress isn’t linear, my hope is that through my efforts over time, I will get to my goals.

I’m excited for the rest of 2018 – by staying consistent, the train will keep humming! My schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Friday is working well. Look forward to some great content coming up.

Action Steps for March 2018

Consistency is the key to blogging. I can’t just go hard 2-3 months and expect to make millions of dollars. It’s an every day, every week, every month process. I have to grind, write, promote, grind some more, and eventually, it will be where I want it to be.

In April, I just want to stay consistent. I made some solid gains in the last 4 months, but really, I’m just getting started.

I’m expecting April to be my best month of traffic yet. I have 2 guest posts on pretty big sites, and I’m also going to be reaping some of my prior efforts on Pinterest, Quora, and Google. 10,000 page views in a month would be amazing and would solidify my existence as a growing blogger.

As I mentioned above, April is Financial Literacy month, and I’m going to be posting all on personal finance.

It will be similar to March in that it will be targeted information and look to bring you from financial novice to financial expert!

I will be sharing with you my income and expenses over the years (from when I left college in 2013 to now), and also detail the composition and change of my net worth over time. In addition to this, there will be some how-to posts, as well as some posts talking about ways for your to increase your wealth and get your financial house in order.

All of my work and writing is inspired and guided by The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

Community is always on my mind. It’s not enough to be a keyboard warrior if you want success. True success and happiness comes from your community and surrounding yourself with amazing people and friends.

That’s why I will be featuring many successful individuals on my podcast in the coming weeks and months. I’m really excited to get that rolling and tap into another market of masterminds!

I’m really pumped for the next few months. 2018 is starting strong and I’m going to keep it rolling!

Readers: How did March go for your blog or website? What tips, tricks, and suggestions could you share with me to improve The Mastermind Within?

  1. I am using Pinterest at the moment and the result is up and down. For January, I had a couple of posts doing really well. After that, traffic starts to slowdown again. I am posting about 30 times a day, but only once per board.

I haven’t found the balance between my own pin vs repinning others’ pins. Hopefully, I will have better results to share next month.

Your podcast is doing well. I like it. Keep it up.

It’s really interesting. At least right now, I’m getting a little better at design and graphic design, so I’m hopeful I can do a little bit better in the future 🙂

  2. Having fun is the most important part. It takes years for things to start picking up (if they ever do) so you really have to enjoy what you do online to make it work. Glad to see things are working for you Erik! Even though the money is small, the fact that you reached 3,500 people in a month is amazing!

Thanks Owen for stopping by and your supporting words 🙂

April is going to be a good month – I’m very excited!

  3. Hey Erik,

Not sure I’ve ever commented here before. You’ve inspired me to track my blog progress a little more closely. I have no idea how I’ve been growing month-to-month, and I’ll probably kick myself later for not tracking it.

In terms of SEO, what’s your strategy? Are you targeting certain long-tail keywords? I’ve found that writing in depth posts that solve people’s problems has done wonders for SEO.

🙂 I’m glad you stopped by and commented.

For SEO, I’m not really doing too much more than just using the Yoast SEO plug-in and targeting things that might be useful.

Over time, I’m getting better at packing my titles and content with keywords and just being cognizant about what I’m putting in there.

For example, when I come up with a podcast title, I look to work their story in, make it sound interesting, and also make it potentially searchable… some are easier than others…

  4. Even if the traffic overall is slightly down, looking at where it is coming from looks like a positive. Almost 50% of traffic coming from organic searches. That is ideally what you want to get new eyes on your content.

Yes, at some point though, you would want people to keep coming back though – yes it is new people, but there’s still a lot to be said and wanted when looking for repeat viewers 🙂
