Blog Traffic and Income Report – December 2017

Erik Entrepreneurship, Thoughts of a Mastermind 20 Comments

Welcome to the twelfth monthly Blog Traffic and Income Report for The Mastermind Within! Each month, I post the traffic statistics and income The Mastermind Within blog has earned and comment on any changes, improvements, and disappointments. I want to be as transparent as possible, because true improvement can happen only when you get the raw details of a situation.

This post will take the following form: first, a recap of the various posts written throughout the month. Second, the traffic and income statistics which are gathered from Google Analytics and the various affiliate and ad networks The Mastermind Within takes part in. Third, I will discuss what changes or strategies I have for the next month, January 2017, to try to grow traffic and make money. As always, any and all feedback is gladly welcomed. I know that I don’t know everything about blogging. (not even close)

“Those who succeed were – at one point or another in their lives – willing to put themselves in situations that were uncomfortable, whereas the unsuccessful seek comfort from all their decisions.” – Grant Cardone

December 2017 Post Summary

In December, I did very well posting. I pushed myself to the limit with 14 posts during my 12 Days of Personal Finance series. It was a wild 3 weeks, as I wrote nearly 25,000 words and brought many new subscribers and readers to this blog.

In December, I posted 18 times. The topics of these posts were wide ranging in nature, but followed where I’m looking to go with The Mastermind Within: Personal Development, Personal Finance, and Entrepreneurship:

Finally, in the personal finance realm, a friend of mine, The Grounded Engineer, wrote a guest post for The Mastermind Within: Using Education to Increase Income and Speed Up Time to Financial Independence.

I really enjoyed writing many of these posts. The 12 Days of Personal Finance pushed me as an individual and writer, and at the end of the day, I now have a 100 page eBook which you can download for FREE by subscribing to this website.

Guest Appearances

I had 2 guest posts in December:

I’m looking to get more exposure through guest posts and podcast interviews. I will be detailing my plans here in a later goals post. 2018 is going to be a big year!

Next… on to the numbers! December built on my best month of November and I’m excited to see what 2018 will bring.

December 2017 Blog Statistics

In December 2017, the blog had 5,209 page views and I made $14.11!! Big money!! (You think I can retire off this? It’s getting there!) This represents a decrease of 26% in viewership month over month.

December 2017 Google Analytics Summary

google analytics december 2017

November was my best month to date – I was featured on Rockstar Finance. I tried my best to beat it in December, but came up a little short. I still had a great month traffic wise, coming in at over 5,000 page views.  Bounce rate is still a little higher than I would like, but I’ll talk about how I’m looking to combat this in the next section.

December 2017 Traffic and Income Report

blog income report December 2017

In the Income Report, you can see the breakdown of revenue for the month of November: I have affiliates links throughout the site from Bluehost, Amazon, MyFinance, SoFi, and Xtheme. In addition, I utilize Google AdSense. As the page views increase, these numbers should increase. Time will tell; this is a fun experiment!

google analytics aquistion December 2017I am very excited the number of email subscribers following The Mastermind Within has continued to increase! THANK YOU READERS AND SUBSCRIBERS 🙂 I’m really glad my influence is expanding and people are actually enjoying my content.

Getting the blog to grow makes me excited to grow it even more. Thank you for being a reader, and I’m looking forward to providing more great content.

Reader Acquisition and Behavior

Shown on the right, is the breakdown of reader acquisition. I spent some time on building my Pinterest account in December, and it has been paying off. Combining Pinterest and Twitter, my acquisition from social media was the top contributor to traffic!

Finally, I switched over to ConvertKit just this past weekend from Mailchimp, Sumo, and Active Campaign. I wanted all of my email marketing in one spot – and I also wanted more flexibility for my lead magnets.

To combat my increased bounce rate, I’ve made adjustments to the site to improve the user experience. First, I’ve created numerous ways for readers to interact with my site on the sidebar, and with the top bar and pop-up on exit. In the sidebar, I have a few images of my freebies and great posts which people can click on to further enjoy my content. I will be tweaking these as time goes on.

With more opportunities to interact with the content on the screen, this should help improve bounce rates. We will see come end of January.

Second, I wanted to get all of the freebies in 1 spot. Before, subscribing in one spot meant you only got that 1 freebie, and none of the others. That isn’t right, and isn’t providing value to the reader. Now, every email sign-up will get instant access to my freebies.

Concluding Thoughts Going in to 2018

What a whirlwind of a year. The Mastermind Within added 168 posts to its collection in 2017, and I’m looking to continue to add to this collection in 2018.

I’m extremely happy there are 366 people who are excited to learn and grow with me. I feel humbled that there were over 40,000 views on this site and that there are actually people who want to read my ideas and thoughts. It’s amazing looking back and seeing how much I’ve grown as a person, and as a writer and marketer.

I’m excited for 2018 – by staying consistent, the train will keep humming! My schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Friday is working well. Look forward to some great content coming up.

Action Steps for January and 2018

Consistency is the key to blogging. While I posted 18 times in November and it showed in my page views, consistency is key. I can’t just go hard 1 month and expect to make millions of dollars. It’s an every day, every week, every month process. I have to grind, write, promote, grind some more, and eventually, it will be where I want it to be.

On Friday, I will be detailing my goals for 2018, both personal and on the blog. I want to continue to see what Pinterest can do – there were a few days in December where I ended up getting 25-50 views from my pins! If I can continue to do that, then I could drive some serious traffic.

I will be posting on my strategy for Pinterest in the coming weeks, and hope to shed light on a seriously confusing topic (at least it was for me just starting out).

All of my work and writing is inspired and guided by The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

Community has been my mind a lot since FinCon. It’s not enough to be a keyboard warrior if you want success. True success and happiness comes from your community and surrounding yourself with amazing people and friends.

I’m really pumped for the next few months. 2018 is going to be epic!

How did December go for your blog or website? What tips or tricks could you share with me to improve The Mastermind Within?

  1. Very nice, man! I had similar page views after one of my articles were featured on last month. I need to look into some of the affiliates you mention. Currently, I only have google adsense installed on my site. You have inspired me to create my own blog traffic report!

Thanks PCI for stopping by. I’d recommend trying to get comfortable on 1 at a time. Twitter is a good first step, as it is pretty easy.

Pinterest is another animal. I’m going to write a post on it later this month.

  3. Making some good progress still, even if down from November (hey, Rockstar can have that impact haha)

One thing I try to look at is bounce rate by acquisition source. Rockstar is almost ALWAYS the highest, and if that’s a huge portion of your traffic, chances are it’s inflating that bounce rate. And really it makes sense that that’s the case – the people who are visiting your site from the Feeds page are there to read the one post. Many of them probably are your regular readers who don’t necessarily ‘need’ to read your other stuff, so they read the new post, maybe comment, and then they’re out.

I’ve found that my bounce rate from other sources – particularly when I guest post or even just from commenting – is quite a bit lower, in some cases closer to 30-40%. Makes me feel better about the higher total number, even if it’s maybe fluffy 🙂

Thanks Dave for the suggestions, and I’m looking into the Google Analytics now. That makes a lot of sense to me!

Thanks for stopping by and have a good one!

  4. Eighteen posts for the month is pretty damn impressive. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I’m hooked to this site. Love what you’re doing, my friend. Keep kicking ass in 2018. Cheers.

  5. I love reading those reports. I wish I had that many pageviews, even half:) Hopefully it will come eventually but I am definitely not in a position to write 18 posts in any months!
Looking forward to reading about your goals

Thanks Caroline for stopping by. You’ll get there eventually, it’s amazing what small steps and time will do for success.

  6. My December was lower than November (especially Christmas Day…crickets), since I’m in my first year too I’m seeing the waves! Thanks for sharing this! Now to have more focus for 2018!

  7. Way to go! The site is coming along very nice. I really like the new subscribe stuff and how you can get access to all in one now. Is that though convertkit? Or do you use something else for that? The 12 days post was very interesting and think it was a big hit. Traffic always dips in December I think so don’t worry. It will pick up soon. At least your subscribers are going up still and the pages per session are up so you know the changes to user experience are paying off and people are staying longer.

I like seeing your social and organic search percentages go up. Those are awesome stats. Also big fan of the Arthur Ashe quote. Keep doing what you are doing. Looks like it’s paying off for you!

Thank you for the compliment DD!

Yes, it is all through ConvertKit – took me a few days to get everything set up, but now it’s good to go!

I’m going to be focusing on the email list in q1.

Thanks for the support and looking forward to a successful 2018!
