Blog Traffic and Income Report – February 2018

Erik Thoughts of a Mastermind 14 Comments

Welcome to the fourteenth monthly, and second of 2018, Blog Traffic and Income Report for The Mastermind Within! Each month, I post the traffic statistics and income The Mastermind Within blog has earned and comment on any changes, improvements, and disappointments. I want to be as transparent as possible, because true improvement can happen only when you get the raw details of a situation.

This post will take the following form: first, a recap of the various posts written throughout the month. Second, the traffic and income statistics which are gathered from Google Analytics and the various affiliate and ad networks The Mastermind Within takes part in. Third, I will discuss what changes or strategies I have for the next month, March 2018, to try to grow traffic and make money. As always, any and all feedback is gladly welcomed. I know that I don’t know everything about blogging. (not even close)

February 2018 Post Summary

In February, I did very well posting. I met my goal of posting 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays.

In February, The Mastermind Within had 12 posts. The topics of these posts were wide ranging in nature, but generally followed the topics The Mastermind Within community expects: Personal Development, Personal Finance, and Entrepreneurship:

Finally, in the self improvement realm, my friend, Saad, talked shared with us how we can achieve any goal: consistency is key. Check out that post here: How You Can Achieve Any Goal: Consistency is Key.

Portal Pages

At FinCon 2017, the first key note speaker was Darren Rowse of He has been blogging for over 15 years, and has an incredibly successful blog with over 300,000 subscribers.

He talked about one change that he made to his blog which resulted in great success: the creation of 8 content portals.

I implemented this concept on The Mastermind Within this month and am very excited to see the results. At the bottom of every post and page, you can see the following:

the mastermind within portals
When someone gets to the end of an article, previously, there wasn’t really anywhere for them to go. Since there isn’t anywhere for them to go, then they click out and leave the site.

For page views, and for my goal of providing value, this isn’t optimal.

With the concept of the portals, a user will look and see a number of things that might interest them and could potentially help them in their life.

Most new readers to The Mastermind Within come with the dream of financial freedom but also with one of a few common needs or challenges.

As a result, I’ve organized the site into 8 sections to help you find the content that best suits your need. These are:

It will be an interesting experiment to see if this pays off with the bounce rate and page views per session on this blog.

Inside these sections, I’ve linked to a number of my older articles. Some of them are pretty good, but because the SEO isn’t that great on them, they are rarely looked at. By highlighting them in these portals, I will be able to leverage what I’ve written in the past and be able to more fully help you on your path to success.

Podcast Episodes

February was the first month of The Mastermind Within Podcast! I wish I had started this podcast earlier.. it’s so much fun, and a great way to learn and grow as an individual.

After recording, I end up going back, listening, and then editing each episode to ensure it makes sense and the sound quality is solid.

In February, there were 5 episodes published, the first 5 episodes of The Mastermind Within Podcast:

Many podcasts look to highly awesome people doing awesome things. Most of those podcasts just stop at the what though – and don’t dig into the how and why. On The Mastermind Within podcast, I’m looking to really dig into the strategies and tactics which are being applied by these impressive individuals.

If you are an iTunes or Stitcher person, The Mastermind Within Podcast is on those channels as well!

Guest Appearances

I appeared as the Money Master of the Week on the Marriage, Money and Kids podcast in this month! I talked about how I earned over $100,000 at age 25, and what my plans were for 2018. My bit was around the 28 minute mark: How to Build Credit without a Credit Card.

Next… on to the numbers! February was pretty great!

February 2018 Blog Statistics

In February 2018, the blog had 8,116 page views and I made $27.95!! Big money!! (You think I can retire off this? It’s getting there!) This represents a slight decrease of 6% in viewership month over month.

February 2018 Google Analytics Summary

blog income report February 2018

blog income report February 2018 comparison

February was a little bit better than January in terms of the views per day. In February, there are only 28 days – with 3 more days, I think we would have hit 9,000. With over 8,000 views in February, The Mastermind Within is on the way to 10,000 page views in a month!  Bounce rate is still a little higher than I would like, but with so many new users, it’s a trade-off we’re going to have to continue to work on.

February 2018 Traffic and Income Report

First, I’ll show you 2017’s blog traffic and income report as a starting point because it’s a good reminder of where we have came from. (I’ll stop this after March)

blog income report December 2017

Now, here’s February 2018’s income report. I’ve broken this out in 2 reports. In addition, I’ve included expenses, so you can get a better understanding of the costs associated with running this blog (and you’ll see some new statistics for the podcast!!)

blog income traffic report February 2018

In February, I made $27.95 from the blog. My MyFinance ads at the bottom of each post ended up bringing in $25.76, but this was the gross number, and not the net number I would get paid (I get paid 50% of the gross number).

Finally, I included costs for hosting, ConvertKit, and any other miscellaneous fees. In February, I hired a Pinterest Virtual Assistant to create some very nice pins for me and work to optimize my Pinterest profile. Also, I paid for a full year of Tailwind upfront (really, if I was a good accountant, I would spread that cost out over the whole year…)

A few things to call out here:

  • You want to make money online? Unless you are a wizard, you will need to spend money.
    • This is what the pros are doing… they optimize their site for conversions, calculate their target ROI, start running paid ads, and then boom, off to the races.
    • It’s simple for me to write that out in 1 sentence, but each of the things I just mentioned requires a separate set of skills and different kind of mindset. Sometimes paying to have something done right is better and less of a headache than you or me suffering for hours to fix a little thing.
  • Hire out what you don’t know how to do, or don’t want to do, and see what you can get done.
    • I love web development and I don’t like making pins. I re-did this site in February, and paid for some pins. Just in the past 2 weeks, I’ve already noticed a decent uptick in Google and Pinterest traffic – and the best part, I really enjoyed re-doing the site!
  • You want to make a lot of money online? Don’t try to nickel and dime your readers with random Amazon links.
    • The real money is in creating targeted landing pages with offers which could be $50-100 conversions. This is something I’m going to explore in the coming months.

Net income for the month was -$321.40, which is a big negative, but will certainly pay off in the coming months.

Here’s some additional statistics on my email list and social media accounts:

blog income traffic statistics February 2018Erik, your email subscribers went down. Yes, they did! I did my first email list purge – going forward, if a person doesn’t open any of my emails for 30 days, then I delete them. I don’t want to spend money on people who don’t care about The Mastermind Within and what’s going on here.

For those of you on my email list, thank you! I’m incredibly glad I’m able to reach people with my content and hopefully I’m making a difference on your life in some way.

Acquisition and Other Commentary

blog income report February 2018 acquisitionOn the acquisition front, search engine traffic is picking up in a big way. I’m very pleased with that, and it shows that while yes, SEO and making your website search engine friendly is tough, it will pay off in the future.

Also, social media traffic decreased, which is due to my inactivity on Quora and Pinterest. But, these past few days, I’ve seen 30-50 people coming over from Pinterest, and hopefully I will be able to keep that going into March.

Pinterest is a visual search engine with over 200 million users – there is so much potential there for growth.

On Quora, I was a little bit less active since I was doing a lot of web design, coding  and development throughout the month of February. I’m almost to 1000 subscribers, but feeling a little less enthusiastic about the platform in general – there seems to be a lot of noise, and not as much great content on there.

Going into March, I’m excited to see what happens on Pinterest, as well as continue to see how Google treats me 🙂

Concluding Thoughts from February

I haven’t felt this good since before my vacation in October. I put so much crap on my own plate, and have been grinding and grinding. Now, I finally have cleared my plate, and now it’s time for lift off. I’m absolutely loving it – and believe me, you haven’t seen anything yet. I’m just getting started.

There’s so much potential here. The comments, views, questions, and interactions are intoxicating and I don’t know if I could go back to my previous life without this blog.  Continue to reach out and let me know if you’d like any help with things. I can answer them in a post, or have a Q&A session on my podcast 🙂

I’m excited for the rest of 2018 – by staying consistent, the train will keep humming! My schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Friday is working well. Look forward to some great content coming up.

Action Steps for March 2018

Consistency is the key to blogging. I can’t just go hard 2-3 months and expect to make millions of dollars. It’s an every day, every week, every month process. I have to grind, write, promote, grind some more, and eventually, it will be where I want it to be.

In March, I just want to stay consistent. I made some amazing gains in the last 3 months, but really, I’m just getting started. Let’s hit 10,000 views in March.

I’m rolling on Tailwind and Pinterest, and am excited to see where that goes. My Twitter bot is going well, tweeting out great content throughout the week, and I’m loving talking to different awesome people on The Mastermind Within podcast! 🙂

I’ve talked a few times about different landing pages and continuing to optimize this site – there’s only so much time in a day, week, and month. I also want to refine my email marketing… there’s a lot on my list, and I just try to do a little bit each and every day. I also have a business which I’m trying to get back into the black..

Speaking of business, in March, The Mastermind Within will have a number of posts focused on entrepreneurship and business. There are a few topics I want to research, but also, over the past 14 months, I’ve learned a ton and want to share this with you.

All of my work and writing is inspired and guided by The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

Community is always on my mind. It’s not enough to be a keyboard warrior if you want success. True success and happiness comes from your community and surrounding yourself with amazing people and friends.

That’s why I will be featuring many successful individuals on my podcast in the coming weeks and months. I’m really excited to get that rolling and tap into another market of masterminds!

I’m really pumped for the next few months. 2018 is starting strong and I’m going to keep it rolling!

Readers: How did February go for your blog or website? What tips, tricks, and suggestions could you share with me to improve The Mastermind Within?

Thank you YFK! I’m excited to see this site grow too – I hope along the way you’ll be able to gain some great knowledge!

  1. Nice to watch your progress Erik. myFinance finally got back to me and said they now require 300,000 impressions per month to take on a new partner. So you are fortunate to have gotten in early. Can you tell me how many myFinance impressions you had in Feb so I can get a feel for it? Tom

    1. Post

Wow, 300,000 impressions? I’ll have to check, but I think the impressions are about 2x page views (or probably around 15,000)

  2. Good work, Erik! I just started using tailwind for Pinterest last week. Spent some hours this week recreating my pins so hopefully it pays off. Will have to look into the tailwind tribes mentioned on your latest podcast.

Last month my pageviews were 4,400. An RSF feature was responsible for most of that.

That’s some solid traffic for a couple months of blogging! Keep it up – looking forward to seeing you take off! 🙂

  3. Congrats on your progress! Very inspiring. I really like the idea of content portals across the bottom of each page. As a new blogger, I’m learning quite a lot from your posts. I appreciate your transparency and insights. Here’s to 10,000 😄
