Blog Traffic and Income Report – January 2018

Erik Entrepreneurship, Thoughts of a Mastermind 25 Comments

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN PAID AND/OR AFFILIATE LINKS.

Welcome to the thirteenth monthly, and first of 2018, Blog Traffic and Income Report for The Mastermind Within! Each month, I post the traffic statistics and income The Mastermind Within blog has earned and comment on any changes, improvements, and disappointments. I want to be as transparent as possible, because true improvement can happen only when you get the raw details of a situation.

This post will take the following form: first, a recap of the various posts written throughout the month. Second, the traffic and income statistics which are gathered from Google Analytics and the various affiliate and ad networks The Mastermind Within takes part in. Third, I will discuss what changes or strategies I have for the next month, February 2018, to try to grow traffic and make money. As always, any and all feedback is gladly welcomed. I know that I don’t know everything about blogging. (not even close)

January 2018 Post Summary

In January, I did very well posting. I met my goal of posting 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays.

In January, I posted 14 times. The topics of these posts were wide ranging in nature, but followed where I’m looking to go with The Mastermind Within: Personal Development, Personal Finance, and Entrepreneurship:

Finally, in the personal finance realm, a friend of mine, Tina Klein, Super Coupon Woman herself, wrote a guest post about her super couponing and saving tips! Check out that post here: We Make a Living by What We Get and We Make Lives by What We Give

Podcast Episodes?

SURPRISE!!!

I started a podcast on a whim. I just wanted to try it, and I’m going for it. I published my first episode late Wednesday, January 31st.

There’s a reason why I didn’t have any announcements leading up to it…. I didn’t know I was starting one until I just went and did it!

My first episode talks about why I do what I do and how I’m aligning my values and purpose with my actions.

I’m really itchy right now – I’m talking entrepreneurial itch. Here’s the first episode: My Values and Purpose – Episode 1 of The Mastermind Within Podcast

Guest Appearances

I had 1 guest posts in January:

I have goals about guest posting and about podcast interviews laid out in my goals post. Going forward, I have a few guest posting opportunities in the pipeline, and a podcast episode which will go live sometime later this year..

Next… on to the numbers! January was my best month ever!!!

January 2018 Blog Statistics

In January 2018, the blog had 8,623 page views and I made $86.65!! Big money!! (You think I can retire off this? It’s getting there!) This represents a increase of 66% in viewership month over month.

January 2018 Google Analytics Summary

Blog Google Analytics january 2018

Blog Google Analytics January comparison 2018

January absolutely knocked every month from 2017 out of the park. With over 8,600 views, I’m on my way to 10,000 page views in a month!Β  Bounce rate is still a little higher than I would like, but with so many new users, it’s a trade-off I’m going to have to continue to work on.

January 2018 Traffic and Income Report

First, I’ll show you 2017’s blog traffic and income report as a starting point because it’s a good reminder of where we have came from.

blog income report november stats

Now, here’s January 2018’s income report. I’ve broken this out in 2 reports. In addition, I’ve included expenses, so you can get a better understanding of the costs associated with running this blog. Also… you’ll see some placeholders for my podcast πŸ™‚

Blog income report january 2018

In January, I made $86.65 from the blog. I accepted one sponsored post and was compensated appropriately. My MyFinance ads at the bottom of each post ended up bringing in $25.76, but I didn’t realize that this was the gross number, and not the net number I would get paid (I get paid 50% of the gross number).

Finally, I included costs for hosting, ConvertKit, and any other miscellaneous fees. Since I’m treating the blog like a business now, I want to make sure I track everything and have the books up to date!

Net income for the month was $37.83, which is the final amount that will actually be saved in the business bank account.

Here’s some additional statistics on my email list and social media accounts:

Blog traffic report January 2018

January was very great for email subscribers: an increase of nearly 200 subscribers! Thank you to everyone who is on my email list! I’m incredibly glad I’m able to reach people with my content and hopefully I’m making a difference on your life in some way.

If you are on my email list, I hope you have used and have enjoyed the freebies you get when you sign up!

Acquisition and Other Commentary

Traffic Acquisition January 2018

A lot of my traffic came to the site from Quora, where I had a fantastic month of answering. What is interesting, is the clicks from Quora are from “nofollow” links, and as a result, are classified as “Direct” in Google Analytics.

That is why the blue section in the pie chart to the right is so oversized.

I’m pleased that social media and organic search is going well, but I want to continue to not forget about these avenues of traffic.

I’m really enjoying blogging and providing value. I wake up most days and all I want to do is write, read, interact, and look to reach more and more people through this site.

That’s why I’m incredibly excited to start podcasting. There’s so many more people I can reach with my voice and with storytelling. I

I’m an okay writer, but there are many topics I’m not comfortable writing about, because they are a little too technical, or the topics are too short for a post.

In addition, I will be able to work on my communication (too many uhhs, ands, and so yeahs!), connect with more like-minded individuals, and continue to grow The Mastermind Within.

Lastly, I’m going to stop sending emails every time I have a post. I’m only going to send emails on Wednesday, and these emails will include a recap on the week, with links to all of the posts that I posted in case you missed them. I will still be posting Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with a podcast on Tuesday.

Concluding Thoughts from January

What a month January was for me. I looked at my email campaign from this past Wednesday and saw only 25% of people opened the email. I thought to myself, “Ah, 25% that’s not good, not one really cares.” Then, I thought to myself…

25% of 550 is over 100 people. THERE ARE 100+ PEOPLE WHO TOOK THE TIME TO OPEN MY EMAIL. I was floored and humbled through this realization.

There’s so much potential here. I’m so excited – the comments, views, questions, and interactions are intoxicating and I’m loving it. Continue to reach out and let me know if you’d like any help with things. I can answer them in a post, or have a Q&A session on my podcast πŸ™‚

I’m excited for the rest of 2018 – by staying consistent, the train will keep humming! My schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Friday is working well. Look forward to some great content coming up.

Action Steps for February 2018

Consistency is the key to blogging. I can’t just go hard 2-3 month and expect to make millions of dollars. It’s an every day, every week, every month process. I have to grind, write, promote, grind some more, and eventually, it will be where I want it to be.

In February, I want to continue to explore automation on Pinterest – I JUST got on Tailwind and OH MY. I have serious regret that I never got on Tailwind in 2017. That’s a missed opportunity there. Oh well.

I will also look to continue to build my brand on Quora.

In addition to these goals, I will be posting a podcast each Tuesday this month. These podcasts will supplement my blog, but be a different spin on the content. There is so much stuff going on in my life that I would struggle to put into words on the blog because I’m not a good enough writer to do so – it’s just easy to talk than write sometimes πŸ™‚

In addition to me sharing tips and tricks about entrepreneurship and self improvement, I will be inviting successful individuals onto the show to share their tips and tricks! I’m very excited to get going with this. If you’d like to be included, feel free to reach out!

All of my work and writing is inspired and guided by The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

Community has been my mind a lot since FinCon 2017. It’s not enough to be a keyboard warrior if you want success. True success and happiness comes from your community and surrounding yourself with amazing people and friends.

That’s why I will be featuring many successful individuals on my podcast in the coming weeks and months. I’m really excited to get that rolling and tap into another market of masterminds!

I’m really pumped for the next few months. 2018 is starting strong and I’m going to keep it rolling!

Readers: How did January go for your blog or website? What tips, tricks, and suggestions could you share with me to improve The Mastermind Within?

  1. Hi Erik,
    Great job. Great blog growth. I had 4,000 pages views in January, my 4th month in existence. It was my highest month so far. I found the first half of the month generated more views than the second half. From looking at your page view graph, it looks similar.

    On the downside, I still can’t get on-boarded with myFinance. They told me a while ago they were short staffed. Now they won’t respond to my follow up requests for status.

      Hey Tom! That’s awesome for you to be at 4,000 in your 4th month! I see your tailwind and pinterest efforts are paying off! πŸ™‚ I joined your tribe.

      I know – I never received an email back from the representative either πŸ™

      Have a good weekend!!

      Hi Heather! Thanks for your kind words – I really like MSM and I’m thankful he let me on his site πŸ™‚

      For the featured image, I actually hide the top one, and then manually inserted the other image in the bottom.

      I looked at your site, and I think putting this code into your CSS Editor should do the trick:

      div.entry-featured img{
      display: none!important;
      }

      The code above might also affect PAGES, not just posts. I’d have to check your theme.

      Otherwise, this code might be the code you want to use:

      .site-main–single .entry-featured img{
      display: none!important;
      }

      Let me know if you have any other questions! Always happy to help!

      Hey Amy, really glad you stopped by and thank you for your kind words. Big things happening in 2018!!!

      No, I’m not really sleeping…

  2. Great job of growing your traffic and revenue Erik. What I am really surprised with is the increased in subscribers. Awesome job.

    I just use tailwind recently and after two months, it has become my number one traffic referral source. You will do even better if you up your Pinterest presence a bit.

      Thank you Leo for your kind words πŸ™‚ I’m going to be getting in Tailwind and start to crush it. 10,000 views in February? I think I can do it!!

      Have a good weekend!

  3. Congrats on your growth! This is very encouraging to a brand new personal finance blogger like myself (just finished month one πŸ˜„). I have been reading the content on your site, and it is excellent. Keep up the good work!

      Thanks Mrs. AR for stopping by! 3 Posts a week is really interesting… it’s a lot of work, but I’m finding a rhythm and groove πŸ™‚

  4. Hi Erik,
    I always come back to these blog update posts because of how helpful they for learning. I have a question. Which post was sponsored for the $50 fee? How did you get it?

    I’m still trying to learn ways to monetize my site as you know from our myFinance communications (still can’t get any status on getting on-boarded there). I was looking at what other techniques you employ, hence my questions on the paid guest post.

    Thanks, Tom

      Thanks Tom for stopping back and I appreciate your question. I’ll email you the details, not because I want to hide it, but because there’s a lot of extra information that I’m not necessarily allowed to share.

      I know, and I haven’t heard anything back from myFinance either about our communications… πŸ™

      Erik

  5. These are some good stuff, that was a big increase in traffic, income and subscribers!!! Looks like 2018 started off with a bang. What was the secret with the increasing the number of subscribers? Also why do you want to stop sending out new post notifications?
