Erik Entrepreneurship, Thoughts of a Mastermind 15 Comments

We are excited to bring you some updates on what is going on behind the scenes here at The Mastermind Within. Our mission statement is “to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.” In order to do so, we must reach more people and look to make connections where connections were not made before.

The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:

The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.

While things have been going well in the first 90 days of blogging here, we will always look to continue to improve. We want to deliver the best experience for our readers – anything less would be a disservice to you.

In this post, Erik will be sharing with you the latest developments for The Mastermind Within. These developments include a brand and blog redesign, bringing on a new partner, and new products for our readers.

We appreciate any feedback or suggestions as this is a community. Thanks for stopping by!

Brand and Blog Redesign

First impressions matter a lot. For the first 3 months of our existence, our front page was busy and didn’t look ascetically appealing. Over the past 2 weeks, a lot of effort and time has been devoted to this effort.

The Mastermind Within Logo and Branding

When we launched the blog around January 1st, 2017, I put together the initial branding to get the ball rolling. I have a confession to make… I’m definitely not a graphic designer and I use MS Paint.

That being said, for the first logo, I threw something together using a free photo and MS Paint.

Initial Logo and Branding

To be honest with you, this logo and branding is okay – it’s just not that clean and it’s a little blocky. In addition, the logo was taking up over 50% of the home page when a user came to visit.

As a result, we headed over to fiverr and got the following logo and branding for $5. Much better!

New Logo and Branding

This branding is much more professional looking and takes up less space on the website. We want to bring our viewers the best user experience and this is one way we have done that.

Front Page Redesign

Remember about 4 paragraphs ago when I said I wasn’t a graphic designer? This applies to front page design… I don’t want to dwell on that point for any longer – I’m incredibly excited about the new front page design!!

Using tiles and cleaning up the header will improve user experience drastically. When I would chat with friends and family about the site before, they were confused and didn’t know what to do on the site. Now, it’s fairly straightforward. Also, it’s colorful and there is a good deal of information on each of the main pages.

As I said before, this took quite a bit of effort on our part to get the pages ready. We are still tweaking things here and there, and like anything, we will always look to improve.

New Products and Services

We’ve been putting a significant amount of time and efforts into building out this portion of our business.

There are two new products and services I want to talk about:

  1. Professional Personal Finance Consulting
  2. Debt Destruction Tool

Professional Personal Finance Consulting

At The Mastermind Within, we want to humanize personal finance. It shouldn’t be taboo to discuss salary, or debt, or savings with friends and family. To help this along, we are offering a free 15 minute personal finance consultation to get the conversation rolling. We put together a questionnaire on Typeform and integrated Typeform and Gmail with Zapier.

If someone goes to the Professional Personal Finance Consulting page and fills out the form, we instantly receive an email with their responses. After reviewing, we reach out to them and schedule a phone or Skype call. Automation is amazing!

Debt Destruction Tool

People are struggling with debt all over the United States. The average credit card debt per household is over $16,000. People on average have over $130,00 in debt – this is a problem and it can be solved.

At The Mastermind Within, we want to provide solutions for your problems. That’s where the Debt Destruction Tool comes in.

The Debt Destruction Tool will help you track your debt over time, budget, understand the snowball and avalanche methods of debt paydown, and help you save 1000s.

First, you enter in your debt information.

Inputting your Debts

Next, you make a budget for yourself and determine if you want to save or pay down debt with the left over money each month.

Finally, you hit the button and see your savings!

Personally, I love building things and I love programming. While Excel isn’t my favorite tool to work in, everyone has it and everyone uses it.

I’m working out the kinks and getting feedback from various reviewers. This should be an excellent compliment to the consulting we offer, but also could be a standalone tool we can sell.

Final Thoughts on New Products and Services

To grow The Mastermind Within into something where I can go full-time, we must have products and services which have the potential to replicate our current incomes. What we have outlined above is a great starting point and we will continue to add to this list as time goes on!

Other Thoughts

Website design is hard. It’s not hard in the sense that each individual piece is difficult or complex. It’s a big puzzle – all the pieces must go together for an enjoyable use experience.

Passive income is hard to build. Right now, we are on pace to make about $35 in March. Personally, I’ve spent at least 20 hours at the local coffee shop over the past 3 weeks to clean up the site, work on SEO, and work on the re-design. This is in addition to the blog posts, commenting on other sites, and regular day to day blog stuff I do. In terms of an hourly wage… umm… let’s not talk about it šŸ™‚

It will all be worth it. I’ve been learning a tremendous amount about business, website design, SEO, product development, and automation of tasks. It’s been awesome to learn new things!

At some point, I’m going to take this full time. As I discussed when determining when I should scratch the entrepreneurial itch, in the coming months, I’m going to leave my job. It will be awesome to see the fruits of our labor pay off. We are getting there, but still have a ways to go.

“I keep challenging myself. I see like almost like one long university education that I never had ā€“ every day Iā€™m learning something new.” ā€“ Richard Branson

Things are happening at The Mastermind Within.Ā  We are all fired up to create something which will help others. We want to help – it’s our goal to figure out what you want and to provide it!

It’s been a wild ride MSM… learning something new every day. I never thought I’d get to this point. Thanks for the comment.

  2. Great hustling Erik! New logo is fantastic, especially for the price you guys paid. The product/services strategy is looking good as well. Seems like the rabbit holes in this space are endless, great work!

Thanks for the comment Max. Yeah fiverr is amazing – I didn’t realize it’s potential unless recently… Website design is an incredible thing… definitely endless!

  3. The site looks great! Well done for putting the time, energy, and resources into building this blog because I know how much work it takes! Looking forward to spending more time checking out your new resources.

  4. Erik – I love the hustle that you and Henry have…and now Jake. I have often contemplated teaming up with others that could share the “burden” of producing content or other aspects of the blog. I did try to bring on a friend back in 2015, but he had competing priorities…and at the end of the day, it didn’t work out.

However, I have since hired a website manager that is currently helping with a major re-design of the GYFG site (hasn’t changed in 2 years ish), then will tackle social media marketing, email marketing, SEO, and monetization. First major goal I have tasked her with is doubling traffic, which in theory should double revenue (or maybe even a little better)

I like to retain 100% ownership, but in addition to the $600/month I am paying her, I will be giving her profit sharing of 10-25% on everything above and beyond the monthly cost (still working out details).

Unlike you guys, I took the scenic route before going down all the rabbit holes that Max Your Freedom mentioned above. I would have tackled some of these things faster had I not had a golden opportunity at work.

The way I saw it was, I could either put an extra 20-40 hours a week into the blog, for maybe $50,000 in income or I could put those extra hours into the job where the upside over the last 3 years has allowed me to triple my income from $90,000 to $300,000.

The upside is not gone from the job, but I am finally to a place where I can allocate a bit more time to the blog, mostly being the CEO and main writer.

Looking forward to watching you guys blow up the internet šŸ™‚

Thanks for sharing your thoughts GYFG. I completely understand and agree with your thoughts on your job. $90k to $300k is an epic increase in your income in 3 years. You would have had to devote a ton of time (20-40 hours like you said) to your blog to get those kind of results. Maybe now you can get that to happen!

We will see what the future holds. Right now, doubling traffic for us would be fantastic… I’m going to be focusing on traffic and product marketing in April!

This has been a fantastic experience – I’m learning so much every day, and if it doesn’t work out – I will have learned many valuable skills: networking, communication, and writing skills. SEO is fascinating – I can’t wait to dive in more on this one.

Again, thanks for stopping by. I love how much detail you go into!
