Influencing Generation Z to Leverage the Internet and Capitalize on Technological Progress

Back in March, I was at my parent’s house working on this blog. My 11 year old sister was sitting next to me and was making a stop action movie with some of her toys. I mentioned to her, “Why don’t you make a YouTube channel with your videos? I could help you set it up!” She got super excited and that day in March, she became a YouTube phenom. Over the past 4 months, she’s now made over 46 videos and has 19 subscribers. I’m very proud. In this post, I want to tell you about how I’m influencing Generation Z to leverage the internet and capitalize on their technological abilities.

Who is Generation Z?

Every generation has a label – Baby Boomers, Generation Y, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z. Who exactly is Generation Z?

As defined by Wikipedia:

Generation Z (also known as Centennials, Post-Millennials, Plurals, or the Homeland Generation in the United States) is the demographic cohort after the Millennials. There are no precise dates for when this cohort starts or ends; demographers and researchers typically use starting birth years ranging from the mid-1990s to mid 2000s, and as of yet there is little consensus about ending birth years.

A significant aspect of this generation is the widespread usage of the Internet from a young age; members of Generation Z are typically thought of as being comfortable with technology, and interacting on social media websites for a significant portion of their socializing.

influencing generation z to leverage internetGeneration Z are the young kids today. Generation Z is the kids who are glued to their iPad, phone, or game system. They are one of the most open and diverse cohorts due to immigration. They are some of the smartest and most technologically advanced people in the world. These kids have it better than every previous generation, and also have the most potential to do something amazing with their lives.

I Want the Best for My Sisters

I’m very lucky to have 4 beautiful, smart, and caring sisters. I’m the oldest of 5 – my sisters are 23, 15, 13, and 11. Each is unique and has their own style. The 23 year old is personable, tenacious, and loves to have fun, the 15 year old is silly and sporty, the 13 year old is very smart and friendly, and the 11 year old is happy and innocent.

As the oldest, it is my responsibility and duty to make sure that I keep the kids together, and it’s also important for me to influence their career paths for future financial success. As a personal finance blogger and self-improvement junkie, I want other people to have the same success as I have had in my early adult life.

I made plenty of mistakes since I was 10 years old. I’ve made many mistakes with money, school, friends, sports, etc. I don’t want them to make the same mistakes. If I can help them avoid making those mistakes and be able to take the world by storm with their ideas and actions, then my goal will be achieved.

Influencing Generation Z to Leverage the Internet

Never in the history of the Earth has it been so easy to build a platform on the internet, connect with millions of fans and followers, and create a lasting brand.

Why am I trying to influence my sisters to look at entrepreneurship as an alternative to an every day job? Utilizing the internet and creating a content driven business is something many people have successfully done. It’s something we are doing here at The Mastermind Within. It’s something that many other bloggers, YouTubers, podcasters, and writers have done before.

Leveraging the internet allows us to use the Law of Effection (from the book The Millionaire Fastlane):

The Law of Effection states that the more lives you affect or breach, both in scale or magnitude, the richer you will be. To make millions, you must serve millions in scale or a few in magnitude.

People ask, how are the Kardasians are rich? They are able to get in front of millions of people on TV. Why is Lebron James rich? He impacts the lives of millions of kids all around the world. Name any famous person and I can guarantee they all get paid very nicely because of the influence they have on many people.

You want to become a millionaire? Sell a $1 item to 1 million people, a $10 item to 100,000 people, or an $1,000 item to 1,000 people – it’s simple math!

The Law of Effection is one of the reasons why I’m less enthusiastic about my day job and very excited about my side hustles and business. It’s crazy to think I can sell a product to someone across the world, but in 2017, I can.

Back to March

When I was sitting at my parent’s house with my sister, she asked me about my blog some more. I told her I was excited because someone had clicked on a MyFinance link and we had made $15 from a single click. I told her, “I made $15 and I didn’t have to do anything. The money I made was passive and I can keep doing this as long as people are coming to my site.” Her eyes lit up like Christmas trees and she was instantly excited to learn more. My family gets excited about money, so this was an awesome moment.

I continued to explain to her my thoughts regarding the my blog, my thoughts for the future, and how excited I am about the potential of selling my products and content. She got all of it and wanted to know more and more about it. I was thrilled – I finally had gotten through to one of my sisters! πŸ™‚

As mentioned in the introduction, I asked her about her stop action videos and asked if she wanted to make a YouTube channel. She was all for it and just like that, Toy Slimy Madness was created.

My Sister’s Toy and Slime YouTube Channel

I’m very proud of my sister as in the past three months, she has taken an idea and ran with it. She has made 46 videos since March 17th, and has had over 1,000 views on her channel. She has 19 subscribers as of today, and is growing the channel through fresh content. Check it out! (shameless plug – though, it’s awesome)

Initially, my sister started out with stop action movies with her toys. She made a few videos with that, but realized they were time consuming and difficult to make. She has now switched to making slime videos. My sister makes slime with all sorts of different combinations of things – glue, laundry detergent, shaving cream, saline solution. It’s pretty impressive that she has been able to learn this on her own and now is telling the world about her collection!

Over the next few months, she’s looking to continue to grow the channel and get to 100 subscribers. She’s loving it and is experimenting with her videos and audience. Here’s the best part: she is only 11. When she is 15 or 16, imagine where she will be!!!

I’m very excited for the future for everyone around me. Right now in 2017, there are so many possibilities to make your mark on the world – you just need to go do it. It will be interesting to see where Millennials and Generation Z take the world… we have so much potential, we need to capitalize on it!

Readers: Are you utilizing the power of the internet to build something awesome? For those of you with kids, are you teaching them about how to apply their technological skills? Do you think you will send your kids off to college, or influence them to become entrepreneurs and creators?Β

Thanks Mark for the comment and the relevant article. I think back to my teenage years and how I enjoyed hopping on the computer to chat with my friends via instant messenger – I don’t remember having too many great conversations, but I was always excited to feel the connection and be “online”.

I want to make sure they do well in the future, so hopefully I can continue to influence their thoughts and actions in a positive way!

  1. Many people say that internet and technology is the death of society, but in reality it’s the breeding ground for new ideas and enhanced interactions. Like you, I’m excited about the future of my blog and what I can potentially do down the road to turn it into a passive income stream. Instead of these gen z’s spending all their time on devices, I’d like for them to spend time thinking about how to turn that device into a medium for success. There are so much opportunity out there for the younger generations to take advantage of technology for their benefit!

I couldn’t agree more with your statement about your blog and how we should be looking to use our devices to make an income stream. I feel like you are inside my head!!!

  2. That is awesome you are helping your sister out. I would have been all over making some YouTube videos as a kid. She is going to freak out once she gets her first ad click.

I will definitely be pushing my daughter towards being a young entrepreneur. She is still working on crawling now so I won’t push it just yet πŸ˜‰

  3. You are a great big brother Erik. I think that if young kids have a mentor to guide them at an early age, they will be asking more questions and trying more new things. For my kids, I want to encourage them to be financially responsible at a young age and have them think for themselves. I want them to be aware that if they work hard and explore their potential early, they will be ahead sooner, just like investing.

  4. What a great post. It’s great to see you leading these kids towards a potential life of working for themselves. I tell y son all the time that if the Internet were around when I was 15, I would’ve been an Internet sensation. My friends and I made all sort of crazy videos. Of course they were taped on a video camera, for VCR consumption only. Hey, maybe all of us should launch a throwback 80’s videos YouTube channel ;-). Thanks for sharing this story.

Thanks IH for the comment – I’m all for starting that channel. I’ll go start getting HYPE on twitter and other accounts. LET”S GOOOOOO!

  5. Thanks for sharing! We’re living in an unprecedented era. It’s crazy how much opportunity abounds. And it’s only accelerating exponentially! It’s great that you’re introducing your siblings to entrepreneurial concepts. They’re going to thank you down the road!

Thanks Tim for the comment. I completely agree with the opportunity. I’m very glad to see you are taking full advantage of it and you are crushing your goals!

  6. I made a you tube toy channel for my son. He likes showing off toys and asking people to subscribe or as he says it “prescribe” at the end of the videos πŸ™‚
Internet is all about learning, connecting and collaborating. The biggest social media company leveraging the internet is FB, and they don’t even create the social media, just organize and distribute it…..amazing!

  7. There is definitely no shortage of good ideas out there to leverage the internet. I love the amount of access that we have to information and entertainment. There is no reason if people want to make money these days to not leverage the internet πŸ™‚ I am definitely glad I live in the era that I do!!!
