It’s the start of the New Year – time to begin new and create a great year. We all have a clean slate, we all have an opportunity to be great. In this post, I will be outlining my goals for 2018, and talking about why it’s important to break down your path to reaching your goal into small, daily disciplines for success.
It’s not enough just to have goals. The goals inform which actions to take. I will be discussing my goals, but also the actions I’m going to take each week and month to ensure I’m on track to reach my goals.
My Goals for 2018
Goals are very important for success. If I don’t know where I’m going, then I’m definitely not going to be able to get there.
In 2017, I set out to do a number of things: read 75 books, post 175 times on The Mastermind Within, buy a rental property, and save money. I wanted to gain experience through learning, doing, and pushing my boundaries, and while I wasn’t successful in all of my pursuits, I was able to grow and become better each and every month.
For 2018, I’m looking to build on my success in 2017, and continue to push myself to achieve great things. 2017 was building the base and laying the foundation, and 2018 will be lifting off towards new heights.
My Blogging Goals
I really enjoy blogging. I love writing, influencing others with my words, providing great value to my readers, working on my communication skills, interacting with other bloggers, and learning how to market online.
My goal for blogging is to continue to grow my blog in accordance with The Mastermind Within Mission Statement:
The Mastermind Within hopes to build a collaborative community where ideas can flow openly, and readers can build knowledge and experience amazing personal growth.
This blog is my main side hustle and something I love to do each and every day. While I have 2-3 other side projects going on in my life, I want to prioritize the growth of this blog because I know I’ll be able to reach many people with my words.
My Personal Goals
My personal goals follow from my favorite quote:
“Your level of success is rarely exceeded by your level of personal development, because success is something you attract by the person you become.” – The Miracle Morning.
Last year, I wanted to push the envelope and learn a lot. I wanted to read 75 books in 2017. I read 29 books in the first 6 months, and fell off in the second half of the year. I learned a ton, but reading that much is too much.
My personal goals include learning and growing through reading and coursework, staying in shape through different workouts and sports, and continuing to gain exposure in the world through travel.
Actions To Achieve My Goals
Actions are the key to success. Simple daily and weekly disciplines added up over time will produce extreme results. That’s what I will be focusing on in 2018 – the actions which will bring me success:
- Write 3 Posts a Week
- Write 10 Quora Answers a Week
- Pin 10 Pins a Week
- Write 10 Guest Posts
- Perform 5 Podcast Interviews
- Read 2 Books a Month
- Lift Weights 3 Times a Week
- Practice Yoga 2 Times a Week
- Max Out Retirement Accounts
- Spend at Least One Weekend a Month Outside of My House
Write 3 Posts a Week
Consistency is the key to good blogging. Posting 3 times a week consistently will allow me to build a great content base and make me continually grow this blog. These posts will be in the areas of personal development, entrepreneurship, and personal finance. I will be doing more book reviews in 2018 as well. Posting 3 times a week will be tough with my 9 to 5, friends, and family, but I’m confident I can make this work.
Write 10 Quora Answers a Week
In 2017, I was able to acquire nearly 400 followers on Quora. I had over 650,000 answer views and was able to drive a little bit of traffic over to this blog. By writing 10 answers a week, I will be able to continue to grow my influence on Quora, which will help grow my potential for sending traffic to this site.
Pin 10 Pins a Week
Pinterest has a huge following and home to many internet and smartphone users. I’ve started to tap in to Pinterest, but have a long ways to go. By pinning 10 pins a week, I will be able to continue growing my following, and send traffic to The Mastermind Within.
Write 10 Guest Posts
Guest posts are some of the best ways to get exposure online. I guest posted a number of times in 2017, and am looking to do the same in 2018. Guest posting is fun as well – since I put myself into a different mindset while writing for another person’s audience.
Perform 5 Podcast Interviews
I had a lot of fun getting on a few podcasts in 2017, and want to have a few more of these experiences in 2018. Podcasts are a lot of fun, and definitely push my communication boundaries!
Read 2 Books a Month
“Your level of success rarely exceeds your level of personal development, because success is something you attract by the person you become.” – The Miracle Morning
“To have more, you simply have to become more. Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. For things to change, you have to change. For things to get better you have to get better!” – Jim Rohn
“I don’t believe anyone can be “improved” by buying and reading a book. They can only be “improve”, if that is the word, by their own actions.” – Felix Dennis
“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” – Issac Newton
Reading is incredibly important to me and to my self development. In addition, this will help me with my posting goal since I will certainly be providing you with the details in my book reviews!
Lift Weights 3 Times a Week
My health is my true wealth. I want to get back to feeling great, looking good, and being strong. Lifting weights 3 times a week will ensure reach my goals.
Practice Yoga 2 Times a Week
The body is more than just muscles. The body also includes the mind and the connection between all of your body parts. I attended a yoga class in December and was very interested in continuing it because it gave me energy, but also peace with the world. It sounds a little corny, but I felt amazing for the next 3 days after I practiced for the first time. Yoga will help compliment my strength training and help with flexibility and core strength.
Max Out Retirement Accounts
I’ve already maxed out my Roth IRA, and will be looking to max out my 401k in 2018 for the first time. In recent years, I’ve been getting the company match, but never went over 10% of my salary into my retirement accounts. Now that I’ve paid off my consumer debt, there’s really no excuse to put this money to work for my future.
Spend at Least One Weekend Outside of My House a Month
I had never traveled alone before 2017 and loved it. I went to Vegas, California and Texas, as well as trips around the Midwest. I want to prioritize expanding my horizons and spending at least one weekend a month outside of my house – be it visiting friends, going on vacation, or seeing grandparents. This will be a tough one, but definitely worth it.
Hopes from Taking These Actions
I didn’t quantify my goals on purpose. I don’t want to put an artificial ceiling on my possible success. That being said, I do have numbers in my head which I believe would be awesome to reach in the next 12 months.
- Reach 25,000 Page Views a Month on The Mastermind Within
- Earn $200 a Month in Blog Revenue
- Grow to 2000 Email Subscribers
- Ability to Squat and Deadlift 275 lbs for 10 reps
- Increase My Total Income Over 2017
Reach 25,000 Page Views a Month on The Mastermind Within
In 2017, my best month of traffic was November, at just over 7,000 page views. I was featured on Rockstar Finance, and ended up with nearly 2,000 page views in 1 day! The following month, December, I had just over 5,000 page views. 25,000 page views is going to be a big increase, but with my actions outlined above, I have no doubt I can get there.
Earn $200 a Month in Blog Revenue
$100 a month was my first goal from starting this blog. Right now, I’m averaging about $15 a month, but I want to consider to push the envelope. I think I could get to $200 with the 25,000 page views, but it will be tough. This has been a fun experiment, and I’m just getting started!
Grow to 2000 Email Subscribers
2000 email subscribers might be the toughest hope out of the 3 blogging ones I have listed here. While I’ve demonstrated the ability to grow my email list, adding over 1,600 people will be a task. Right now, I have 366 email subscribers, and will look to continue to build it through my lead magnets, and getting traffic through Quora, Pinterest, and Twitter.
Ability to squat and deadlift 275 lbs for 10 reps
In college, my maximum squat was 340 lbs and I could deadlift a little over 300 lbs. Right now, I can do 165 lbs for 10 reps, but am improving each week. Lifting 3 times a week, eating well, and sleeping an appropriate amount each month, I definitely think this is possible. I would be incredibly strong, since I’d probably weigh about 175 pounds at this point, but hey, I said this was a hope!
Increase My Total Income Over 2017
I earned just over $107,000 in 2017. Right now, I’m forecasting about $103,000 without any raises or unexpected windfalls. My side hustles are starting to take off, but there’s definitely more room to grow. If I can generate an extra $5,000 to $10,000 through side hustling, I’ll be very happy.
Dreams (Which Could Happen but Are Wild to Think about at this Point)
I have a few dreams which at this point, are wild to think about. I have no idea if I’m going to get to these, or if I should even pursue them, but they are things I have thoughts about once in a while.
Replace The Mastermind Within Freebie Tools (Debt Destruction Tool and Income Statement Tool) with Web Applications
Install a Forum on The Mastermind Within to Continue to Build the Community on the Site
I don’t know how forums work, and I’m not sure I want to get in to this mess with moderating questions, but having a forum on The Mastermind Within would be right in line with my vision of creating a community here. A forum is in the back of my head, I don’t know if it would be a good idea or not – I have to do some more research.
Dunk a Basketball
I’m 5’8”and while quite athletic, I’m not anything special. I can barely touch a 10 foot rim (and while this represents about a 35 inch leap for me), but I think it would be amazing to be able to dunk a basketball just once in my life. If I can squat and deadlift 275 lbs for 10 reps, I’ll be very strong and if I’m able to get that kind of lift on the basketball court, I could be jumping out of the gym… time will tell!
I’m excited to see where I can go through these actions. Actions are what are important for success. Simple daily and weekly disciplines added up over time will produce amazing results.
Goals are just ideas and thoughts we have. To achieve these goals, we must take the necessary actions and be consistent. What I’ve outlined above will help me reach my goals and I’m sure I’ll be in a great spot come 2019.
