Take Action Today: 1 Year Blogiversary for The Mastermind Within

take action today

Today marks the 1 year anniversary, or blogiversary, of The Mastermind Within. It was 1 year ago today, I registered the domain themastermindwithin.com, and I’ve never been happier about my choice.

Taking action that cold day in December 2016 was so simple, and yet has had a huge impact on my life in 1 year. Yes, there have been some long afternoons in coffee shops, some late nights, and early mornings – but it’s all been worth it.

This post is not going to be a blogging statistics and content post recapping the last year – this will happen next week. Instead, I want to talk about something a little deeper – why taking action is so key for people interested in entrepreneurship and why you must take action today.

Taking Action is So Important for Potential Entrepreneurs

Whenever I chat with someone who is interested in entrepreneurship, I always ask them what they are actually doing with their time and if this is lining up with their thoughts. For the better part of my adult life, I’d been telling people that at some point, I’d love to run my own business and explore entrepreneurship. It was all talk and little to no action for the first few years.

Early on, back in 2015, I had a blog, A More Successful You, that only lasted 3 months. I was very interested in entrepreneurship, but got a little bored and burnt out with blogging.  My focus moved to spending more time on my newly purchased house and hanging out with friends.

For the next 15 months, I didn’t do too much with entrepreneurship. I was house hacking, and feeling good about my situation in life. I had paid off my student and auto loan, and was saving close to 50% of my income each month.

But I was ready to push my boundaries a little more. If wealth was my goal, then I needed to explore entrepreneurship as an alternative investment vehicle to accelerate the growth of my net worth.

Enter entrepreneurship lite: blogging with the intent to make mistakes, learn, and hopefully make money.

Entrepreneurship Lite: Blogging

I’m calling blogging entrepreneurship lite because it’s incredibly simple to start, if you screw up, no one’s going to lose their job or waste money on your site, and finally, there’s not too difficult of a learning curve to get up to speed.

Running a successful enterprise is incredibly hard work. There’s product development, creation and delivery to worry about, presentation of your product online or in a store, marketing, analytics, finance, accounting, and the list goes on and on.

Starting a blog is just you and your thoughts, or for me, me and my thoughts.

That being said, I’ve learned a ton from blogging, and what I’ve learned will set me up for future successes in my entrepreneurial life.

Some of the Things I’ve Learned in the Past Year from Blogging

blogging entrepreneurshipFirst and foremost, there aren’t too many things which haven’t been talked about, but everyone is unique and everyone has a story to tell. The things I enjoy blogging about, personal finance, entrepreneurship and self-improvement, are all fairly static things – there’s not too much in terms of new things to talk about in terms of the strategies, philosophies, and tactics.

With that said, I have a story, you have a story, and Billy down the block has a story – we are all unique and we all have a different perspective on life, and this is interesting to others.

On the marketing front, I’ve learned a ton of things. As a math major, someone who performs statistics and programming in Corporate America, and someone who had never taken a marketing class in his life, marketing was a new frontier to be uncovered.

I wouldn’t say I’m an expert, not even close, but in the past year, my marketing efforts have resulted in 360+ email subscribers, and over 40,000 page views on this site. Learning about web design, user experience, email marketing, social media marketing with Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook – there’s just so much to learn and apply online.

Finally, and I’m sure there’s a lot more I’ve learned that I’m forgetting, I’ve met and learned from many amazing bloggers and created a few great relationships that I wouldn’t have had if I didn’t start blogging. Just last week, I detailed 100 personal finance bloggers to read in 2018 – there is so much information out there in the world! I’ve learned a lot about other people – about their motives, thoughts, actions, and goals – and have been influenced and motivated to succeed at a higher level.

I’m very excited for 2018 to see what 12 more months of action will bring!

Why You Need to Take Action on Your Goals Today

proactive behavior take controlEnough about me – this post is for you.

If you are at all interested in entrepreneurship, it’s critical you start taking action today. Taking action can be in any shape or form – doing research on your product, learning about accounting and finance, or registering a domain and learning some HTML/CSS.

I have a friend at work who is like-minded and was always telling me about his great ideas. Every week, he was coming up with some new idea that would make $1,000s of dollars once launched. I’d tell him nicely each time, I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but without taking action, your ideas are just ideas. I’d say I think they are decent ideas, but I’d have to test them out – is there a market for this product or idea?

I’ll be frank – ideas are worthless. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t dream, or try to come up with something unique. What my comment means, is that when we have an idea, we should pursue it, and we should take action today.

Learning, experience, and success comes from the actions taken each day.

My Task for You

First, what are your goals? What are you looking to do in 2018, 2019, and the future? What do you want to do with your life in the future?

Second, how are you going to reach those goals? What are the actions you will take today, tomorrow, and the next day on your path to success?

Take these 2 tasks, and let me know what you are going for in your life. I’d love to hear what you have in store for your future. I’m inspired and motivated by others success – I can’t wait to hear about yours.

  5. Happy blogiversary, Erik! You’ve had an incredible year and I can’t wait to see what’s next. You’re absolutely right about taking action today. I tend to be an idea person more than a follow-through person, so it helps to have an accountability partner.

  7. “Learning, experience, and success comes from the actions taken each day.”

Love the way your mind works, Erik. Passivity coupled with dreaming is a recipe for a dreary life. Action is a prerequisite for a meaningful life. Congrats on year one of entrepreneurship lite. Can’t wait to see what you bring to the blogosphere in 2018. Happy New Year, my friend.

P.S. Oh, I almost forgot. My goal for 2018 is a life filled with comfortable shoes, great sex, and a warm place to go to the bathroom. And just in case this goal proves to be too ambitious, my backup goal is to build a great farmhouse in rural North Carolina. I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks Mr. Groovy for stopping by. I’m super excited to see the new farmhouse. In the future if I’m down in your neck of the woods, would love to see your craftsmanship.

I have no doubts you will be successful with your goals as well 🙂

  8. Happy blog-a-versary!
I finally opened a individual 401k for my side hustle. I’ve procrastinated most of the year but finally just did it. 🙂
2018 will be deciding how much side hustle is ‘worth it’ vs time & effort to enhance my career, vs time to socialize, and build / maintain friendships, so I have people to hang out with when I’m FI.

Thank you Jacq for the comment!

Here’s the thing: whatever decision you make will be the right one! Personal finance is personal. We only get one life 🙂

Honestly, I think you can balance the 3, sometimes side hustles end up helping you gain skills which will help your career, but also it’s always good to have friends!
